Here is what is wrong with the public school system

Ann Legra, a first-grade teacher in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan, has received an “unsatisfactory” job rating for the past six years. Her superiors want to fire her, but have been barred from doing so.

Moreover, she’s now suing the Department of Education on discrimination charges for trying. And, chances are, she makes more money than you do; $84,500 per year.

As reported by the New York Post on Sunday, Legra has racked up “six [consecutive] years of failing her students,” which the city *argued in a 16-day termination hearing.

Not really a public school problem as much as a overly strong union problem. This has been a lingering issue for some time now. Where the unions have established themselves, getting rid of a teacher who doesn't measure up is terribly difficult. What was an effort to protect unfair teacher treatment through unions has become a monster of bureauacy where students suffer through no fault of their own. Earning $84,000 in Manhatten doesn't seem too excessive considering how expensive it is their to live there.

Pay her to leave or let her teach 6 periods of gym. She doesn't want to teach. She wants the paycheck.

Does she have an advanced degree or something because it usually takes quite a bit to get to that salary range as a teacher?

Ohh, she's in NYC. I read Washington Heights and for some reason was thinking she was out on the west coast. :laugh:

As the husband of a public school teacher, I can say this: the system is chock-full of apathetic morons. Very few know the education laws, let alone care. If this lady failed teaching for 6 years straight, she should have to refund her salary and find something else to do!

The worst of the teachers are inept and LAZY paycheck collectors who think their duties include converting oxygen to CO2 and holding a chair down. Let my wife in charge and she'd fix it by firing them up or firing them out.
