-17F actual temp this morning. Reminds me of Northern Sweden as a child. Ugh.

This is one of the longest, if not the longest, cold spells I can remember ... and it will continue next week.

We are cold and other places are warm. Friends in Prague say they are having an unusually warm winter with no snow. Send snow they say so they can go skiing.

This type of unusual weather, both colder and warmer than normal is predicted in the climate change models.

No question about it, the climate is changing. Extremes in both directions are forecast in the computer models as is dry and wet. Extremely strong storms are forecast and we have already seen foretastes of this.

It's cold here in Minneapolis, but we are missing most of it this year. NOW, last year....we had 16 days in a row where the temperature didn't get above zero. It was routine to get up in the morning to -20 degrees with a 'high' of -5.

We had much the same in Northern Wisconsin. Bad winter last year, but good for the foundation-repair businesses here I understand.

Really? Because we are just now getting around to breaking records set in the 1800's. Was it mule farts and women fanning themselves that caused the unusual weather back then?

There is a good reason for the swing to very cold. The basic idea may be counterintuitive, but that does not mean it is not true.

Can extreme weather events like this weekend's historic outbreak of cold Arctic air across the U.S. be caused by the warming of the Arctic?

Though it seems counterintuitive – global warming bringing about extreme cold – the answer may be yes, according to scientists like Weather Underground's Dr. Jeff Masters and Dr. Jennifer Francis, a research professor at Rutgers University's Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences.

The cause is believed to lie in the jet stream, the fast-flowing river of air high above the Earth that marks the boundary between cold, polar air to the North and warm tropical air to the South.

As the jet stream shifts position back and forth over North America throughout the year, it plays a major role in the weather patterns and temperatures we experience in the U.S. In recent years, the movement of the jet stream has changed significantly, bringing "weather whiplash" with strange, out-of-season weather events more frequently than in the recent past.

Blah blah blah... again, what was the cause of this same event in the 1800's? This is not new. This has happened before. There were no cars, aerosol cans, etc., etc. More avoiding the truth to push a load of manure. <--- which creates methane and "harms" the earth. You dirty Earth killer!

Strange, here in WA State its been a bit warmer than usual - hi 50's, low 60' s during the day in the Seattle area. I live about 70 miles south of Seattle, flowers bulbs are coming up, grass is green and growing, rhodies are starting to bloom, frogs are serenading all night...

But where are the robins?

Must be Global Warming, oops I mean Climate Change (or has it gone back to global warming)?

North Georgia is bracing for a storm now. It's been fairly cool this winter for us, nothing like -1° F, but we've been into the single digits a time or two. This current storm is proving difficult to forecast. One source says my hometown could see 1-3 inches of snow, another source says 2-5 inches, the National Weather Service advisory says 3-6 inches, and yet another source says 4-9 inches. Forecast high for tomorrow is about 48, but that won't be until way later in the afternoon, so I'm probably sticking around the house tomorrow.

I'm sure most of the bread and milk is gone from grocery stores. I've got both, but I'm low on drinks, so I need to stop by after work. Loads of fun.

I know. Kirk Mellish on WSB Radio, usually the most dependable and accurate of the forecasters, has even said this storm is hard to forecast, and he admits if it moves ten miles north or south of the current projection it could completely change the face of the storm (north = more rain for metro Atlanta, south = more snow).

 

[Use of Time]

My commute home that usually takes about 40 minutes took over three hours last night. Roads weren't even that bad but this is coastal Virginia and everybody freaks out. We are supposed to get anywhere from 6 to 15 inches tonight. I should be out of work until Monday.
