Deuteronomy 4:23-24 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

Deuteronomy 27:15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman.





Behold, a full size recreation of the temple in Athens, including a 42 foot high idol of Athena, as well as sculptures and engravings of other gods. And, nobody cares. I think it's cool, but find it odd that given the pretty obvious scriptures on such things, combined with the typical baptist eagerness to use the old testament while bashing gays, that nobody gives a crap. At all.

What's your thoughts on it? Why are idols ok, not just here, but in many churches that have pictures or even full size sculptures of Jesus? The common explanation is that it's ok as long as people don't worship it. Well, that's not what it says, plus many a Catholic have prayed to these scultures of Jesus and probaly of Mary or something.

It was built in 1897 and is now an art Museum. Should they tear it down? Is someone using it as a church? Don't see the connection here.

Are people actually bowing to these re-created statues or are they just that, re-creations of historical artifacts? I have no problem with the latter.

So, is your church conducting marriages there? Are there so called Christian weddings happening there that are condoned by my church or staff members? If not, then it is not my business nor yours to tell pagans where they can and cannot get married.

My wife's cousin got married in their backyard where they had a bird bath with a frog on top. By your standards they were engaged in idol worship.

Somebody explain for me what the problem is here. The place is like an art museum. There are buildings like this all over. What are we supposed to do with them?

Did Christians build these places? Are we worshiping idols in them?

I'm just not sure what the issue is.

It's a secular building.

It's literally a 42 foot idol of a goddess inside of a recreation of a temple dedicated to her, on government property. Christian weddings happen here, right underneath Athena herself.

The instructions on whether such things are acceptable seem to be pretty clear. Just surprised that literally nobody cares given this fact. Had we set up a golden statue of Baal at the courthouse, even if only for fun or historical education purposes, people would probably care. What's the difference?

I happened to visit it for the first time on Friday and was genuinely curious as to how a 42 foot idol of an ancient god with its own matching temple could be placed on government ground without a single word from anybody even though there is very obvious instructions on the matter. Its even one of the ten commandments. It doesn't say don't worship idols, it specifically says don't make the things in the first place.

It's strangely ironic if you think about it, an atheist raises Cain and gets an engraved stone of the ten commandments taken off of the courthouse lawn and people are up in arms, but nobody cares about the government maintaining the idol of the ancient god in the temple, which is in fact directly against one of the ten commandments.
