When we look at the failures in the black community today, there seem to be lots of “activists” who want to tell us the problem lies in poor police relations — militant policing and presence. About two weeks ago I was on NPR’s Diane Rehm Show. The issue was about the black community and the other guests ranted on about everything other than what the real problem is — the decimation of the black family. Now, I must apologize because I’ve been sharing that the illegitimacy rate in the black community was 72 percent. I was wrong. It’s now 75 percent.

As Dr. Walter E. Williams writes for CNSnews.com, “Hustlers and people with little understanding want us to believe that today’s black problems are the continuing result of a legacy of slavery, poverty and racial discrimination. The fact is that most of the social pathology seen in poor black neighborhoods is entirely new in black history. Let’s look at some of it. Today the overwhelming majority of black children are raised in single female-headed families. As early as the 1880s, three-quarters of black families were two-parent. In 1925 New York City, 85 percent of black families were two-parent. One study of 19th-century slave families found that in up to three-fourths of the families, all the children had the same mother and father.”

“Today’s black illegitimacy rate of nearly 75 percent is also entirely new. In 1940, black illegitimacy stood at 14 percent. It had risen to 25 percent by 1965, when Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action” and was widely condemned as a racist. By 1980, the black illegitimacy rate had more than doubled, to 56 percent, and it has been growing since. Both during slavery and as late as 1920, a teenage girl raising a child without a man present was rare among blacks.”

“Much of today’s pathology seen among many blacks is an outgrowth of the welfare state that has made self-destructive behavior less costly for the individual. Having children without the benefit of marriage is less burdensome if the mother receives housing subsidies, welfare payments and food stamps. Plus, the social stigma associated with unwed motherhood has vanished. Female-headed households, whether black or white, are a ticket for dependency and all of its associated problems. Ignored in all discussions is the fact that the poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994.”

Nice try. But it stems directly from slavery and husbands and sons being snatched from their families and sold off as property leaving thousands upon thousands of single parent families. Single mothers and daughters who were in turn raped by the "Masters" to produce more illegitimate children.

But we don't want to talk about how the pattern for illegitimate children was cast, do we?

Move ahead to modern day where Black men are profiled and incarcerated for the things their white counterparts are not.

Interesting that the ones who enslaved and created the single parent black family in the beginning have created a prison cottage industry to enslave and take the fathers away again.

White Privilege is a beast. It wants everyone to take responsibility while it takes none.

Interesting thread. I must say, that I agree with both the OP and the retort. I don't see one as right and the other wrong, but rather opposite sides of the same coin. Both are contributing factors. Just to throw another monkey in the mix... Planned parenthood has murdered more blacks than the KKK by a magnitude.

And this is how people move to solutions Br. Dan. Everybody has to take responsibility. In speaking with folks in the black community, they know that they have to do better and take responsibility for the part that Blacks have played in their communities being where they are.

But what they don't like is the folks who have always been in power not acknowledging that they too have played a part in these communities being what they are.

Yes indeed. But the same can be said about white people. But in the black communities, I think the case can be made that the systematic removal of black fathers from the family just as during slavery contributed heavily to this also.

    Facts don't support your claim.

1940 the black out of wedlock rate was 14%
    1965 it was 25%
    1980 it was 56%
    Today it is 75%

One thing you are forgetting or not stating accurately, though: The black family was mostly intact until Lyndon Johnson's Great Society gradually destroyed the black family by making welfare and illegitimate children a way to make a living. I teach in an all-black public school, and I see the devastating results of this every day. I know what I'm talking about, and the statistics confirm it.

And during that same time from no one was "husbands and sons being snatched from their families and sold off as property". Of course when that was happening a couple hundred years ago blacks were as involved in that as anyone else.

And just how does this not support my claim of slave masters setting the standard for Blacks for producing illegitimate children? The same thing was going on during the early 1900s and into Jim Crow.

When you had no rights according to the denizens of white racial supremacy and Jim Crow, black women were often raped by white men and nothing could be done.

So again, white folks showed Blacks how to make babies and not take care of them.

I'd really like to see this "all-Black" public school. The black family was still fractured from slavery and continued racial inequality well before LBJ.

To say that the black family was mostly intact until the government started to help people wreaks of more freedom means more disruption and "deterioration" of entrenched, obviously "better" societal values.

The notion that the welfare of Black Americans and Americans period decreases in direct proportion to how many rights they have is, sadly, not even a little bit outside the conservative mainstream. And we've heard it before.

You really think that a culture of having your husbands and sons lynched and drug and burned and hanged and your wives and daughters raped and beaten and treated as less than their white counterparts was considered an "intact" black family?

What you had were granddads and grandmamas and aunts and uncles taking in family members because the black family was still being decimated prior to Civil rights by overt racism and murder.

So yeah there were more "two parent" families. But it's kinda just like you're seeing today where the black men have been removed from the families by incarceration. The kids are being raised in "two parent" families. But it's their grandparents or other relatives.

    It's just a repeated cycle.

Your first sentence that I highlighted: What do you mean by that? Do you doubt what I say?

I would just like to see it. I've never seen a school in which there was 100% of any one skin color especially today. What's the name of this school?

It's common in the rural South, in the area where I live.

It's rather ironic. They did away with white segregation, and it was replaced by black segregation. Not compelled, as before, though.

The rate of out of wedlock births was 14 percent in 1940 - long after the end of slavery.

Did black people suddenly remember the example of slave owners in 1965?

And isn't it a bit racist to believe that black people see a bad example and are somehow compelled to imitate it?
