“It is Christ Himself, not the Bible, who is the true word of God. The Bible, read in the right spirit and with the guidance of good teachers, will bring us to Him. We must not use the Bible as a sort of encyclopedia out of which texts can be taken for use as weapons.”

    ―C. S. Lewis

Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Eph 6:15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
    Eph 6:16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;
Eph 6:17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

None of that negates what C.S. Lewis said.

The entire Bible negates his statement. We live and walk, as Christians, in a Spiritual battle. Our tools for that Spiritual battle are found in the Bible. When sin is promoted the answer is all of scripture not just how liberals want to interpret the life of Jesus. All the words of scripture are inspired by God. It is not that just the authors of the books were inspired, and it is not just that parts of scripture were inspired, but it is that every word of scripture was inspired by God.

The bible testifies of Him, it is our spiritual food which we ingest, it is our 'code of ethics' which we are to live by.

C.S. Lewis spoke utter foolishness here.

We need the bible. He speaks to us through it. Without it, we can not learn about Him.

CTB, wherever you got this quote from, they didn't relate his entire sentence about the bible as weaponry.

Here is Lewis' actual last sentence from a paragraph of one of his letters to a Mrs. Johnson on November 8, 1952.

"But we must not use the Bible (our ancestors too often did) as a sort of Encyclopedia out of which texts (isolated from their context and read without attention to the whole nature and purport of the books in which they occur) can be taken for use as weapons."

With that, I can agree. Cherry-picking from the Bible to beat people over the head with opinions is wrong.

But as the abbreviated quote that you cited from another source, I cannot agree. Your quote says the Bible cannot be used as a weapon - period.

Rev. quoted a passage that those the word is the armor of God and can be used both offensively and defensively in our spiritual battles.

The Bible itself affirms, in John 1:1, that Jesus is the living Word upon Whom the written word depends and is derived.

Yea, I started to say a couple things differently and just ended up conflating both.

You are right. The quote I saw did not include the words you put in bold. They should have.

Yes, I agree with this sentence. To cherry pick the Bible and use those verses to beat others over the head is wrong and a complete misuse of the Bible.

Armor goes on people. It is Christians who are prepared and have the armor. The Bible and the life of Christ is where the armor comes from.

Obviously the entire quote, as you have shown, does not give a good meaning to the Bible as a weapon. Thanks for point that out, and for supplying the entire quote.

The "Word of God" and the "word of God" are not the same thing, any more than Charles Dickens and David Copperfield are the same thing. We have a Holy Trinity, not a Holy Quadrinity.

The living Word is the source of the written word.
