Judge Bunning's stance on social issues has been a huge disappointment to social conservatives in Kentucky. His parents are Jim and Mary Bunning, devout, go-to-church-every-day Catholics from the Cincinnati area. Jim Bunning served in the Senate from Kentucky and, during the 1950's and 1960's, was pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. He is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. David Bunning was appointed to the federal bench by George W. Bush while his father was senator. At the time liberals were highly skeptical of the appointment, although it turns out he is really one of them.
