Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he would implement a database to keep track of Muslims in the United States as part of his immigration policy.

Trump, interviewed by NBC News after a campaign appearance in Iowa on Thursday night, was asked how a database tracking Muslims differed from efforts last century to track Jews in Nazi Germany, and said: "You tell me."

Trump, who has made immigration policy a key part of his campaign for the Republican nomination in the November 2016 presidential election, told NBC a database would be part of his plan. "I would certainly implement that, absolutely," he said, adding that the United States also should control its border with Mexico with a wall, something he has long touted.

"There should be a lot of systems, beyond databases," he said.

Trump said he would use "good management" to register Muslims and that they would be signed up "at different places." When asked whether Muslims should be legally required to register for the database, he said, "They have to be - they have to be."

Is he a stark, raging loon? This is not World War II Germany. And we're not Nazis registering Jews.
I heard a clip this morning of an NBC News journalist asking him if there was a difference between what he was advocating and what the Nazis did to the Jews.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE. But Republicans are actually backing this man.Confused

Trump is pandering to his base, which is the uneducated, "MERICA!" idiots that the republican party has become full of in the past 20 years. These people are scared of anything that isn't like them and comparisons to the Nazi party are extremely on target.

We should have a database of all immigrants not just Muslims. We need to know who is coming and who is going.

I believe we've already got such a database of all immigrants. It's maintained by Homeland Security since they took over or absorbed the old INS.

For what reason would we need a database of all Muslims?
Are we gonna keep a database of all Christians too?

I was not suggesting we did not. I was pointing out that we do not need a special database for Muslims. I guess I could have said it better.

What amazes me is the number of people who think that it is a good idea.

Donald Trump is distancing himself from the suggestion that he wants to create a database to track Muslims in the U.S.

In a tweet on Friday, he said the idea came from a reporter.

Trump refused to rule out a database and special IDs for Muslims in an interview with Yahoo! on Thursday.

“Certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy,” he said when asked if he would implement the programs.

Reading the exchange between himself and the reporter, Trump is telling the truth. He never said he wanted a "muslim" database. The reporter lied. Nothing but spin.

Trump did not disown the idea, did not deny it.

No but did say what he wanted and it did not include a "muslim" database , but one on all refugees.

    Outright lie by the reporter.

The reporter tried multiple times to get Trump to say he would set up a "muslim" database. Trump never took the bait , so the reporter just went with what he wanted him to say.

An ambush that failed, so the reporter just made it up.

"I think we should have a database on everybody who comes into this country," Carson told reporters in the state house. Told that rival Donald Trump had proposed tracking Muslims already in the United States, Carson added that "hopefully, we already have a database on every citizen who is already here. If we don't, we are doing a very poor job."

“So when they stand up on television and say ‘the tragedy in Paris means you have to give up your liberty. We need more phone surveillance.’ Barnyard expletive.” Paul told a crowed of students who enthusiastically cheered.

“Are you allowed to use profanity? Is that part of the– are we in the free speech zone?” the Libertarian leaning Paul quipped.

“But here’s the thing is, they are collecting your phone records as we speak. They did not miss a beat. And even though we voted on reform, all of your phone records are still being collected and stored in Utah.” Paul explained, referring to the NSA’s bulk data collection program.

“Did it stop the attack in Paris? Not one iota.” Paul concluded.

Paul again stands out from the GOP crowd on the issue of government surveillance, being the only candidate, aside from Ted Cruz, to express a desire to stop the NSA spying on Americans.

Other candidates such as Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush have called for increasing the NSA’s spying.
