Church was wonderful today except for one embarrassing glitch. I doubt our pastor knows what the tittering and gasping was all about.

As I said, the rest of the service was wonderful, and yes, we will quietly and PRIVATELY bring our rather naïve pastor up to date on one thing.

That thing is the video that was used to start the service. It was a wildfire popular group singing a Christmas carol to a new tune. (Noel.) Problem is it was immediately apparent to the guests, visitors, and congregation that one of the singers, maybe two, are really flaming out there if you get my drift.

Got home and a quick check online and yep, out and proud. And seem proud that by doing a Christmas album they are being electronically welcomed into churches. On of them makes the point he prefers ******* rather than a more polite term for his lifestyle since he is really out on the fringe even of that movement.

Sigh. This isn't about contemporary vs hymns, or trashing new tunes. But can't we get folks to maybe check up just a tiny bit on what individuals and groups openly stand for before we use their music in church?

It's sad because the songs are rock solid but the background is not so much. So, why don't we take this same approach with politicians? I've seen all types up in our churches and folks don't do anything but applaud. I didn't hear too many folks complaining that Mitt Romney rejects Jesus and preaches a false Jesus outside the church and is a leader in the Mormon cult.

There was no shortage of George W. Bush in our churches. And he made a statement to the world that Christians and Muslims worship the same God...three times.
Reagan was involved with the masons. Nancy was into astrology.
We allowed them in our churches.

So exactly where are we to draw the line of being careful? Will it once again be at the precipice at which our pet sins begin?

Pentatonix is the group, and it doesn't take much of a search to learn they have some members that make a point of being "anti" everything our church stands for.

For those more naïve, much of the hair and clothing fashion of today is making specific statements from the john wayne wannabes to the skinheads to the ****** as Mitch calls himself.

I would not want to have a skinhead open a church service either.

We draw the line when people are defiantly anti decency.

And if we don't know what that is, may God have mercy.

If this is Pentatonix that the OP is talking about, they are indeed a phenomenal singing group. And yes, it is obvious to anyone who has a brain that at least two of them are flamingly gay. I love their music. I would not hold to a video of them being played in my church. Why?

No one who is unrepentant of sin (cherishing it in their hearts as David says) or holds a false doctrine should participate in any way in leading the church in preaching, teaching, singing, praising, or worshipping.

Otherwise, they are welcome to come to church. Who knows, they might be saved. Mitt Romney can come to my church. He and his family would be most welcome. He just can't preach, teach, lead the singing, or in any way "lead" in anything.

I also love LL Cool J's "Mama said Knock You Out". But we aren't going to listen to it in church. But I do listen to it at home.

One can indeed listen to secular music, written and sung by nonbelievers. There's a lot of things we do at home that is benign, spiritually speaking, that isn't appropriate for church.

Truth in there. But I'm specifically referring to the appearances that many of the leading politicians get to do where they ARE allowed to speak or share with the congregation. And it happens quite a bit. So again, where is the line? I think it should be right here, where you said

But it needs to be applied justly and evenly to ALL, not just those guilty of the homosexual offense outside our churches. Because if THAT were the case and we were holding firmly to it, there's no way some of these people should be allowed to stand in GOD's pulpit and share ANYTHING with our congregations.

No, it sounds like people know how to engage in activities that aren't sinful, but yet also not something appropriate for inside the church. I going to assume that you like watching some sort of sporting events. I'm also going to assume that you would deem it improper to have the same sporting event broadcast during your church services.

Does the sporting event have anything to do with the church service? Your assumptions as usual are a bit absurd and apples and oranges.The original post mentioned a person supposedly openly homosexual singing in a VIDEO and not even in person in the church to open the church service.

Well, there are a lot of things that are not worthy of church but worthy of our time otherwise. I'd not be cooking for my family in church but it's fine at home. I also wouldn't go to church in my PJ pants and slippers and sit and read a book but it is fine at home. I am going to be in my riding breeches and manure covered boots later - and I certainly wouldn't bring those into church! I don't judge everything by whether it is OK in church but whether it is good or not.

Let me ask you this: Do you play Christmas music in your home? How about a song like White Christmas? I'm sure you do. However, would that be a song you would choose for worship? No? Why not? Because it's not a song that is for worship - but it's a perfectly fine song in and of itself.

YES, always vet at least for the sake of the sensitivity of the congregation.

After graduating from Bible College I became an assistant pastor/youth director in a local Baptist church in MA - KJVO, and very "straight laced". This was over 40 years ago.

The pastor went on vacation and we had selected sight and sound unheard - but recommended - a group for "special music" in his absence.

When they played, it was a rock 'n roll venue - 4/4 time, accentuated back beat
and LOUD, so much so it could be felt in the walls.

When the pastor returned he asked why I didn't stop them after the first song.
I was honest and said "I liked it". I was considerably younger than he.

No, I'm no longer KJVO or "straight laced".

I agreed with them then, and I still do.

Music communicates to the heart far sooner than the intellect. A wise assembly will not only "vet" but purposely avoid not just music but any thing and thinking of the flesh and that which pertains to the fleshly.
