From info I had in an old thread regarding the TNIV (and I assume would apply to the NIV).

In Proverbs chapters 1-21 there are 229 occasions where the Lit. was noted in the margin and not in the text itself. The text has a more idiomatic reading.

In the HCSB of the same section there are 73 footnotes noting the Lit. while a more idiomatic expression is used in the text.

Staying with the HCSB :

The NASU has 17 of the Lit. in the text
The ESV has 15
The TNIV has 14

I would say that the TNIV/NIV is in pretty good company ;-)

wouldn't it be better though to say that the nasb would be a translation based upon a more formal structure of rendering into the english, and thus does produce a majority of the time a more literal version?

Judging from the above, you are a prime candidate for the NIrV.

Psalms
40:2 : mud of the mire
In the text of the NASU: the miry clay
In the text of the NIV : the mud and the mire
40:12 : forsaken
Text of NASU : My heart has failed me
Text of NIV : my heart fails within me
41:3 : turn all his bed
Text of NASU : sustain him upon his sickbed
Text of NIV : sustain them on their sickbed
43:4 : the gladness of my joy
Text of NASU : my exceeding joy
Text of NIV : my joy and my delight
44:4 : salvation
Text of NASU : victories
Text of NIV : victories
44:11 : for food
Text of NASU : to be eaten
Text of NIV : to be devoured
44:14 : shaking of the head
Text of NASU : A laughingstock
Text of NIV : shake their heads
44:15 : the shame of my face has covered me
Text of NASU : My humilation has overwhelmed me
Text of NIV : My face is covered with shame
___________________________________________________________
So in three of the above examples the NIV retains the so-called literal rendering.

Psalms
46: 5 : at the turning of the morning
NASU text : when morning dawns
NIV text : at break of day
46:6 : gave forth
NASU text : he raised
NIV text : he lifts
47:9 : has greatly exalted Himself
NASU text : He is highly exalted
NIV text : He is greatly exalted
48:5 : were hurried away
NASU text : they fled in alarm
NIV text : they fled in terror
48:6 : Trembling
NASU text : panic
NIV text : Trembling
_________________________________________________________________________
The NIV got one of the five examples in a so-called more literal manner.

Psalms

49:4 : open up
NASU : I will express
NIV : I will expound
[The NIV is closer. Expound means to explain. Express just means to communicate.]
49:5 : supplanters
NASU : my foes
NIV : wicked deceivers
[Not merely 'foes' as the NASU has it; wicked deceivers comes closer to the meaning.]
49:12 : honor...are destroyed
NASU : man in his pomp...perish
NIV : People despite their wealth...perish
[Pomp just means pageantry --showing off --while "wealth" is better here. Despite all their wealth --they will not endure.]
49:14 : away from his habitation
NASU : they have no habitation
NIV : far from their princely mansions
49:15 : hand
NASU : the power of Sheol
NIV : from the realm of the dead
49:18 : his soul
NASU : while he lives
NIV : while they live

Because one may open a thread to look at it, doesn't mean they have taken the time to read it.

Like this thread, I have read maybe three of the posts.

You seem rather hung up on the NIV.

Are you an NIV "only?"

Well, you'll have to do better to stay informed.
You seem rather hung up on the NIV.
Spoken by someone who isn't informed.
Are you an NIV "only?"
Hardy har har. I suppose you are ignorant of my many threads commending the NLT, Norlie, MLB, REB, Phillips and many more.

I asked because it seems that your posts in some manner reject both the KJV and NASB in favor of the NIV.
