Light, sorry but you should have checked definitions before replying as you did. Embassy and consulate are synonyms.So the writer did not make an error. The writer simply selected the word embassy instand of consulate. He could have selected consulate and still the meaning is the same. I realize most folk have the belief that there is a difference in meaning and most believe the only embassy is that which is in the capitol of a country. But, that does not stand up when you check a dictionary.

Regardless the fact still stands that fewer embassies, consulates and legations have been attacked under Obama than under Reagan or Bush and except for one investigation during Reagan's' term in office the other attacks and deaths of American diplomats were not investigated. Shows the GOP was simply playing dirty politics.

They are synonyms in the dictionary but not in the real world. The US ambassador's residence is in the embassy in Tripoli, Libya. Benghazi was a diplomatic outpost. Embassies are typically large, fortress like buildings, sometimes occupying an entire city block and guarded by Marines, located in a country's capital city. Compounds, outposts, consulates, etc. are smaller facilities in smaller cities or towns.

Well, only in dictionaries. There are plenty of examples of synonyms in dictionaries that would never stand up in the real world usage. Embassy and consulate is one of them.
