Marco Rubio Pushed for Immigration Reform With Conservative Media

    A few weeks after Senator Marco Rubio joined a bipartisan push for an immigration overhaul in 2013, he arrived alongside Senator Chuck Schumer at the executive dining room of News Corporation’s Manhattan headquarters for dinner.

    Their mission was to persuade Rupert Murdoch, the owner of the media empire, and Roger Ailes, the chairman and chief executive of its Fox News division, to keep the network’s on-air personalities from savaging the legislation and give it a fighting chance at survival.

    Mr. Murdoch, an advocate of immigration reform, and Mr. Ailes, his top lieutenant and the most powerful man in conservative television, agreed at the Jan. 17, 2013, meeting to give the senators some breathing room.

    But the media executives, highly attuned to the intensifying anger in the Republican grass roots, warned that the senators also needed to make their case to Rush Limbaugh, the king of conservative talk radio, who held enormous sway with the party’s largely anti-immigrant base.

    So the senators supporting the legislation turned to Mr. Rubio, the Florida Republican, to reach out to Mr. Limbaugh.

    All I know is that Fox News moved to the middle and now they are pushing Rubio as the new establishment candidate, who also has the donations of the former Jeb Bush crowd.

    Rubio was passed over by Romney in 2012 because of his questionable real estate deals and because of his big spending with the Florida GOP credit card.

    If Rubio is pushed out by the voters, that will leave Trump as the establishment candidate (you can make a deal with either Trump or Rubio or Fox--your example) and the opposition conservative Cruz.

    The GOP is so badly fractured that it will be interesting to see what the voters do but we should have a winner by March 15, no?

    No. Trump will not have the necessary delegates to win on the first ballot going into the Republican National Convention. Kasich will win Ohio and Rubio will win Florida (yes, I know how far behind he is in the polls right now, don't bother posting the numbers.)

    So you think that the establishment vote will be divided between Kasich and Rubio? That is bad news for them. They are not going to have high enough percentages to win any delegates as the primaries continue.

    All candidates will get delegates in those states with proportional primaries. However, some are "winner take all" states, meaning the highest vote getter wins all the delegates from that state. Florida and Ohio are winner take all states. I suspect Kasich is going to stay in the race through the Ohio primary, win that one, and then drop out the following week. For Trump, the damage will be done because Kasich will hold those Ohio delegates that Trump needs badly.

    Then again, Kasich might stay in the whole way, picking up delegates and playing for the brokered convention scenario (which I strongly believe will happen.)

    Some of the remaining states have a 20% threshold to win delegates. It should soon be a two or three man race. I am not sure that the establishment candidate will do any better than before. Rubio has a lot of baggage for his age.
