With the death on March 6 of a dignified First Lady–an influential cultural figure in her own right and the devoted keeper of her husband’s flame–both Ronald and Nancy Reagan have now passed into history. Increasingly, it appears, the same can be said of the party they took such care in shaping.

The most obvious evidence of this is the rise of Donald Trump, a man who is the antithesis of so much that Ronald Reagan stood for: intellectual depth and philosophical consistency, respect for ideas and elevated rhetoric, civility and personal grace. The fact that Trump is the favorite to win the Republican presidential nomination shows how far the GOP has drifted from the animating spirit of the most consequential and revered Republican since Abraham Lincoln.

Trump’s attempt at a hostile takeover is not a thunderclap on a cloudless day. It was years in the making. And when the mantle worn by Reagan might be settling on the likes of Trump, this end-of-an-era moment demands that we reflect on what has happened to our Republican Party.

With the help of crossover Dem's the Democratic Party is trying hard to get their man Trump the liberal Democrat in place. Hopefully true conservatives will be able to keep that from happening. Trump would help the Dem's have a dem in office no matter the primary outcome

You know its funny how when Reagan was running and during his time in office the left called him dumb and unintelligent. Now in recent years the left (much like the op) trots out Reagan in a positive light and all of the sudden he is smart. Very disingenuous.

The GOP created the myth or the Reagan personality cult after he left office. In the long run history will not consider him a great president. His cult will slowly diminish as time passes.

You consider me a leftist. I have never, not to this day, considered him particularly intelligent and I do think he and his administration was very corrupt.

And yet your op says the exact opposite.

That does not I agree that Reagan was intelligent. I do agree that the GOP
That does not mean I agree that Reagan was intelligent. I don't.

The important point of the article is that the GOP Reagan helped to create is just about dead. What we see now, with Trump, is the logical end of the death spiral that is the logical result of his policies and of his corrupt administration.

I take your "dumb" rating as a compliment, seeing how you are so wrong so often and in your continued attempts to throw in red herrings into threads. Thanks for the compliment.

Uh huh, then you shouldn't post an article painting him as such. You really need to read your won article better. The party they are painting is the party you disagree exists yet you say it is dead. Sorry you cannot have it both ways.

Sorry you are incapable of understanding. Reagan and Busjh II were poor presidents. Both cost many American lives needlessly. Trump would be a total disaster.

Have you noticed Trump never says how he going to accomplish any of his promises. Rather like Trump University, long on promises but zero (0) on reatuts and keeping those promises.

You are making an assumption and you know what making assumptions does? Right?

No as of 2011 Mr. Trump financially supported Democrats to the tune over $600,000 in campaign contribution. He supported financially, Harry Reid in his reelection bid, Rahm Emmanuel in his run for mayor of Chicago and even supported Hilary in her political aspirations. He gave interviews and stated he would better fit the Democratic Party if he were to run for office. He stated that he was Pro-Choice, supported benefits for gay and lesbian couples as well as a civil union but not marriage and he supported a single payer insurance system similar to Obama care. Now he has flip flopped on those issues. But only since he decided to run as a conservative republican. He is still a democrat spouting conservative views just to get the nomination then his true spots will show and many conservatives will have bought what he is spouting not this one
