Bahamas Issues U.S. Travel Advisory, Warning Citizens To Be Wary Of Cops

    The Bahamas has issued a travel advisory in the wake of police violence in the United States, warning residents to take extra safety precautions if they go on vacation in the U.S.

    “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration has taken a note of the recent tensions in some American cities over shootings of young black males by police officers,” the statement issued Friday reads. It’s presumably referencing the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday, Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota on Wednesday and increased tensions after the sniper attack that left five police officers dead at a Dallas protest Thursday.

    “We wish to advise all Bahamians traveling to the US but especially to the affected cities to exercise appropriate caution generally,” the advisory says. “In particular young males are asked to exercise extreme caution in affected cities in their interactions with the police. Do not be confrontational and cooperate.”

    Great advice that means nothing, Black people have said this for years. Cooperation has nothing to do with it as Philando Castile's case shows. There is a sickness in police departments across this country where a lot of police officers see no value in the lives of these black and brown people.

    And when you have marginalized and undervalued someone's life because you think they are a stereotype, their cooperation means nothing if you want to execute, no pun intended, a degree of power over them. THAT is racism.

    Meanwhile, in the Bahamas:

    "Criminality amongst the ranks of the Royal Bahamas Police Force is seemingly becoming blatant, so much so that it is persistently infringing upon the Constitutional rights of Bahamians. Over time, the Royal Bahamas Police Force has been accused of near systemic patterns of police brutality, verbal abuse and outright misconduct, clearly in violation of citizens’ rights.

    Our society has been inundated with allegations of police brutality where certain officers are accused of having cultivated an air of terror and having displayed vile, sadistic behavior."

    Probably because they couldn't think of anything else to say. A lot of the black people I know have given the side eye for a long time to anyone who says 'if they'd just cooperate".

    This week showed again what Blacks have said. Cooperating doesn't mean anything. The police STILL shoot and it's testimony again that there is a real problem with policing in this country.
