Newt Gingrich: Whites 'don't understand being black in America'

Most white Americans "don't understand being black in America" and the discrimination African Americans face, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, said Friday.

Gingrich, who is among a group of individuals presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is vetting as a possible running mate, made his remark during a Facebook town hall with Van Jones, a former aide in the Obama administration.

The event had been scheduled to focus on opioid use, but with the nation reacting to two highly publicized shootings of black men by police this week, followed by the killing of at least five Dallas police officers in a gun attack Thursday night, the two shifted to talk about race and ways to bring the nation together.

"It took me a long time, and a number of people talking to me through the years to get a sense of this," said Gingrich, who served as speaker from 1990 until 1995 and who represented an Atlanta-area congressional district for two decades.

"If you are a normal white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America," he said.

White Americans "instinctively underestimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk," he said.

Gingrich's remarks followed a statement released by Trump on Friday in which he said the nation has become "too divided." Outside of the statement, Trump has not spoken about the shootings. He canceled a campaign rally that had been scheduled for Florida.

Gingrich, known for being blunt -- he initially spoke out against Trump following the candidate's controversial remarks about a Latino judge -- also talked about life in the South and specifically in Georgia, where he moved when he was in high school.

“It was still legally segregated, which meant the local sheriff and National Guard would impose, by force, the taking away of rights of Americans," he said. "We’ve come a fair distance, now we have a black mayor of Atlanta and have had a series of them, in fact. ... But we’ve stalled out on the cultural, economic, practical progress we needed.”

Oh, isn't that nice of Newt to try and smooth out Trump's racist tendencies and statements/tweets. He'll have a full time job as VP nominee going around and apologizing and correcting Trump's misstatements.

White people, not blacks, face discrimination. For example

The alleged discrimination that blacks face is not discrimination. The cop who recently shot a black man in his car, there's not a shred of evidence race had anything do with it. More whites are killed by police than blacks, so there's no statistical evidence of discrimination in the big picture, either. The difference is, when a white person is killed by police, the media ignores it (I'm not just blaming the media, there's no White Lives Matter movement making a big stink about whites who are killed).

    Gingrich is a pandering liar.

Pure stupid. And you're right. That's not discrimination. THAT was racism.
Again pure stupidity. And I'll serve up the same response given in the other thread.

See this is why so many black folks think that so many white folks are racist bigots. Black people say that they've been mistreated and the first thing some white folks do is try to disprove why they shouldn't feel the way they do, or try to say that they are telling lies.

So far this year, how many of the Whites killed have been unarmed?
How many 12 year old white folks have been killed within two seconds of the police showing up?
How many were murdered for selling cigarillos?
Tell me how many white people have police killed while looking at guns in the gun section of WalMart?
How many unarmed white people have been shot 41 times while trying to get into their apartment?
How many unarmed white people have had 50 bullets shot into their car over nothing?
How many unarmed white people have been face down in a subway and shot dead by police?
How many unarmed white people have been shot in the back by police and then accused of going for his gun?
How many little 7 year old white girls have had their house stormed in the middle of the night and been shot to death in their sleep?
How many white folks were just sitting in their car and shot to death by the police in front of their 4 year old daughter?

It's because stupid folks keep trying to justify stuff like this with stupid statistics about police killing more white people.police will kill their loved ones on the slightest pretext without facing any meaningful punishment.

God help us if some of you are expected to point folks to Christ.

Pure stupid again. The difference is that police aren't shooting unarmed white people for doing nothing,

And you are part of the reason that white officers think it's okay to murder unarmed black people.

    Ain't that the truth?:D

I haven't seen any Trump bumper stickers at church yet. I've already started praying that if there are and lost visitors come to the church and see them that they don't leave without going in and thinking that ours is a church that supports the hatred that has come from that man's mouth.

Everyone feels slighted now and then. The difference with blacks is that they're taught to see these things as discrimination. They're also taught that what their own behavior causes is caused by racism. A great irony is that even black preferences make blacks feel like victims.

Ain't nobody talking about being slighted. You call hopping out the car and shooting a 12 year old child slighted?

Nope. Newt said discrimination. Blacks will tell you that it is racism. When someone feels as though because of their color and position, they have a right to exhibit a certain amount of power over you because of your color, THAT is racism. You've got cops from one end of this country to another who have used racism to justify in their minds their rights to MURDER unarmed people of color because they have devalued those lives in the same manner that you make clear that YOU do.

I pray to God that you're not a police officer.

They aren't taught any such thing Stop making up stuff. You seem to be confused about what racism is.

Man, get that fish on out of here.:Rolleyes

Blacks don't understand being black either. But they're real good at killing each other.
