A new poll out today carries bracing news for Republicans eager to interpret the election results as a sweeping mandate for their program.

A plurality of Americans trust Congressional Democrats more than either President-elect Donald Trump or their GOP counterparts on Capitol Hill to develop solutions to the major challenges facing the country, according to the newest installment of the quarterly Allstate/Atlantic Media Heartland Monitor poll.

Similarly, President Obama is enjoying his highest approval ratings in the survey since July 2009, with 56% of respondents rating his job performance positively, compared to 40% who give him a thumbs-down. And a plurality say his administration has increased opportunities for people like them to get ahead—Obama’s highest marks on that score since just after his 2012 reelection.

And yet, voters REJECTED what would have been a 'third Obama term'. Not only that, Trump won states that Republicans haven't won in decades. The Election is the only 'poll' that counts.

History will reveal the magnitude of the failures in direction during the Obama administration, especially in light of the achievements of the administration to come after him.

Yet 62% said the country was headed in the wrong direction just before the election. That percentage has dropped dramatically since Trump was elected.

Typically, you confuse personal popularity with the failure of his agenda. Obama's agenda got Trump elected..

The big "O's" approval ratings increase in direct proportion to the decrease of time he has left in office. By Jan.21 his approval rating will be through the roof!!:Laugh:Roflmao;)

I thought he was married, and therefore straight. I don't see why he would want a mandate.

    Oh...

The poll question may be worded so that those who answer think that they are approving of his leaving...

Obama campaigned for Hillary saying that she would continue his 8 years of governing.

Trump campaigned for repealing Obama's 8 years of policy.

Trump won, that's all the polling you need. Ain't no need for nothing besides that.

The polls that say Obama has 56% approval are probably about as accurate as the polls that incorrectly predicted the election results.

As president, Trump does not have the mandate someone like Reagan had. However, with the way the GOP won the down slate elections, the Dems don't have one either. IOW, the mandate is in the GOP's court.

They don't have a mandate, true, but they don't need a mandate, they have majority rule.

We survived eight years of what has probably been the most evil administration in American history in terms of blatant immorality and implementation of anti-Christian policies. I suspect we will survive Trump. Regardless of people's trust and opinions regarding how he may lead, at least as Christians even the anti-Trumps among us can rejoice that Clinton will not be President. I know you don't like Trump, but just look at it in the perspective that you didn't get Clinton.

I understand your dislike of not only Trump but the ideologies behind the GOP. Both the DNC and the GOP want to do what they believe is best for our nation, and they are strongly divided about which direction to go. And people on both sides determine where the other would lead.

But my point is that at least we can rejoice that an evil has been, however temporarily, at least slowed at the national level. We can hope that (even if we do not like Trump, his platform, and his policies) at least we will have a pause in the decisions and policies that have accelerated the decline of Christianity in our country. I do not think that it will be the Trump administration that destroys America, but I do think that those opposed to him may give it their best shot (like communities who destroy their own community in protest). Even if you are right that Trump's administration will result in economic, political, and social decline, at lest the evil it opposes in the DNC platform has been repressed for a moment. I think this is temporary, but at least we (as Christians if not as Americans) can rejoice that for a while the policies advocated by the Democrat Platform may suffer loss.

I believe we have simply traded one evil for another that may turn out much worse for you and me.
