The hatred displayed today in the city of Charlottesville is heart breaking. May God show grace and mercy to the victims of the senseless violence. There is a cancer in the heart of America that no protest can heal.

Indeed and it goes all the way back to the British Loyalists versus the American Patriots.

But I agree, only another awakening from heaven can heal it.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

And what did the idiot city council think would happen when they decided to remove the statue of Robert E. Lee? He is part of our history. Time to own it!

What I find so interesting is that the State Flag of Virginia includes the words "Sic Semper Tyrannis" - the words John Wilkes Booth shouted as he shot President Lincoln in the head. Has anybody suggested removing the words from the State Flag?

(And, yes, I am aware the words refer to King George III and have been on the flag since 1776. Not the point.)

If they ever try to remove the statue of Mary Tyler Moore in Minneapolis, there will be hell to pay!
smh, it's a stupid statue for goodness sakes.
    Pride...it's the great sin.

Am I right in believing that Gen. Lee did not personally own any slaves?
I seem to recall reading it somewhere.

As I recall, Lee freed his slaves before accepting the generalship of the Confederacy.

Oh, and let's not forget that after the defeat of the Confederacy, slavery continued to exist in some Northern states that had chosen to remain in the Union (e.g. Delaware) until 1867.

Lee did not, but his wife did. She inherited them from her father, George Custis, whose will instructed that they be given their freedom no later than 5 years after his death. That requirement caused all kinds of trouble for Lee.

Lee was against slavery, but decided to stand with his home state when they seceded. He was offered the position of General in the Union Army but decided to stay with Virginia.

Some. But he also sold some who had been trouble makers, with the provision that they be freed withing the 5 years as stipulated by Custis's will.

Yes. The Emancipation Proclamation only applied to states in rebellion. Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, and what became West Virginia remained slave states until the ratification of the 13th amendment in December of 1865.

Listened to the comments by Gov McAulifff(sp.) & they SOUNDED good, BUT, the comments would have been a whole lot more believable had such comments been heard after Ferguson, BLM marches, etc.
The double standard rears it's ugly head!!

Own it? Sure. Revere it? Nah. Forgive me for not faulting the city council for not giving a crap about a bunch of white nationalists who can't get over losing a war.

I'm sure all those people that just hate riots will be here to condemn the white nationalists rally. Hmmm. I'll have to keep waiting. They'll be here any minute now. Checks watch.
