Some politicians in the past have recommended deploying the National Guard to help Chicago quell gun violence, but Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin went even further on Thursday, suggesting the United Nations perhaps send in peacekeepers in the face of what he called a “quiet genocide.”

Boykin was traveling to New York to meet with Oscar Fernandez-Taranco of Argentina, the U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Support, to seek international help with “horrific levels of shootings” and other violent crime in West Side and South Side communities.

“I’m hoping to appeal to the U.N. to actually come to Chicago and meet with victims of violence, and maybe even possibly help out in terms of peacekeeping efforts, because I think it’s so critical for us to make sure that these neighborhoods are safe

United Nations peacekeepers in Haiti sexually abused nine children over a period of three years, an Associated Press investigation has found. It’s the latest in a long series of sex abuse scandals to plague U.N. peacekeeping missions worldwide.From 2004 to 2007, 134 peacekeepers from Sri Lanka operated a child sex ring, luring children on the poverty-stricken island with candy and bits of cash, according to the AP. After a U.N. report incriminated them, most were sent home, but none faced jail time.One victim told U.N. investigators, “I did not even have breasts,” according to the AP. Over a period of three years, beginning when she was 12 years old, she was forced to have sex with over 50 peacekeepers, the AP said. YA that's just what Chicago needs!

On the other side of the Atlantic ocean, similar abuses by UN troops in the Ivory Coast also made headlines this week. A 2010 U.S. diplomatic cable recently released by WikiLeaks showed that the international body’s soldiers were coercing underage girls to have sex in exchange for food and other essentials.

A poll conducted by the non-profit group Save the Children revealed that eight out of 10 minor girls in the Ivorian town of Toulepleu admitted to regularly engaging in sexual acts with UN troops. In an interview with the AP about the leak, a UN spokesman admitted commanders had "failed to maintain an environment that prevents sexual exploitation and abuse."
