In a new report on the Trump administration's "pilot program" for its "zero tolerance" policy that has resulted in the separation of thousands of children from their families who entered the country illegally, NBC News notes that the separations began in October 2016, months before Donald Trump was inaugurated.

As Ed Morissey suggests, the title of NBC's report is potentially misleading: "Trump admin ran 'pilot program' for separating migrant families in 2017," it reads.

Though the title correctly cites 2017 as the start date of the official zero tolerance "pilot program," the subtitle makes clear that the true start date for the separation of migrant children from their parents was actually 2016: "The numbers show the government was separating migrant kids from their parents back in 2016 and 2017," reads the subtitle.

Grandmother arrested & handcuffed....

Today a sad moment in American history: a grandmother was arrested in Fairfield, CA while attempting to deliver toys and books to children who were separated from their parents at the border.

These children are being held at the Baptist Child and Family Services Facility at 2301 Pennsylvania Ave, Fairfield, CA.

Baptist Child and Family Services is a private NGO that has received over $500 million since 2015 from the United States government to incarcerate migrant children who have attempted to seek asylum at the US-Mexico border. These children, rather than being placed in foster homes or integrated with communities, have been held—many for years at a time—in these lock-down style facilities.

At least a dozen of the children separated from their parents at the border were taken to this facility and are still there.

The woman arrested in the video is Liz DeCou, grandmother of four. She was held until late into the night at Solano County Jail.

Following her release, DeCou said, “Why was I arrested for wanting to offer comfort to a child?”

Have you considered that we have thousands of our own children who do not have foster homes. Our annual need is to place a quarter of a million foster children. We cannot take care of all these illegal immigrants just to please the upper classes who want cheap labor. Los Angeles has at least 58,000 homeless people, most of whom are black, who have lost their jobs and homes to unfettered immigration. I think that American blacks are 85% opposed to open borders because they are the ones being harmed the most in what is blatantly a racial attack on them from the rich.

She should have been arrested because she was trespassing and asked politely to leave but refused. It is as if you tried to get into a battered women's shelter--they would not know who you were and you would be arrested if you did not leave except in this case it was a children's facility. She might have been part of a grooming gang.

She failed to tell the whole story. A person cannot walk into those shelters without an appointment. She wanted to make a scene. Who knew who she was or what she had?

There doesn't seem to be an indication that the separations started in October 2016 - or that those were comparable to the separations initiated under President Trump.

The child-and-parent separations under the Obama administration were done under two circumstances: 1) the child was perceived to be in danger from the parent, or 2) the parent was arrested.

Generally under the Obama administration, the parent was not arrested and thrown in jail. Therefore, it's pretty misleading for someone to say "the separations started under Obama." Since a parent was arrested only if there was serious criminal activity (not just illegal immigration), those separations were rare.

The separations under Trump were routine, and required no crime other than illegal immigration .

And the administration said there were 1000 separations between October 2016 and September 2017. But they repeatedly refused to provide month by month numbers.

So there might have been (for example) 3 separations in October 2016, 2 in November, none in December or January, and then 120 the first month after Trump was inaugurated. There's not really any actual data to suggest otherwise.

And we know that separations were not routine during the last administration.
