Any thoughts on the 19th century preacher Alexander MacLaren?
I have been reading Alexander MacLaren's sermon excerpts in the 17-volume series Expositions of Holy Scripture (1988, Baker). My goal is to read one exposition a day. I am currently reading expositions in Genesis. I highly recommend this series to anyone desiring some of the best expositional preaching from the 19th century.

Did you get all 17 books?
Some Amazon customers (27%) received only one book when ordering from what is described as in the offer as a complete 17 book set.
Maclaren was certainly not a Calvinist. A subscriber to AWP's Studies In The Scriptures asked if she should read Maclaren's stuff because he was an Arminian. Pink wrote back saying that by all means read Maclaren, because he had valuable insights despite being an Arminian. If I recall correctly, while MacLaren was a faithful expositor and preacher, he was also a gifted writer. He began his ministry before Charles Spurgeon and ended it well after Spurgeon's death. MacLaren was a Calvinist who has a great affinity for Scottish Presbyterian Reformers like Knox and Durham, although he was a solid Baptist. His American counterpart was John L. Dagg.
