Communists have used walls and machine gun towers to keep their people in. If they had a truly wonderful system, none of that would have been needed. Communist tyrany is so blatant and "in your face," it makes you wonder why anyone would see it as something good.

 

Because people are stupid.

 

Ask those under chairman Mao, all 100 million whom he killed off, is just bah!

 

In the mind of the socialist or communist, the 'common good" is what counts the most, as they will willingly give up personal liberties in order to have ease/comfort and pleasures!

 

My great grandfather was chased outa East Europe by commies... so you think I’m not sensitive to it... quite the contrary

Please Y1 give examples where Democratic Socialism has lead into the sort of Communism identified in the OP.

There is a broad spectrum of Socialism, ranging from the post WW2 British system to Stalin & Mao Communism. The long term alliance with the US meant that Socialism survived in the UK, though the struggle with Capitalists caused the premature collapse of the post war Socialist government. Nevertheless, the Conservative government of McMillan et al implemented many Socialist policies. The 1980s government of Thatcher reversed the gains & its effect continue to this day.

Socialism is democratic, with free elections and a concern for peaceful implementation.

Communism is a dictatorship, controlled & enforced by military power.

The world problem is that the US agencies, CIA & FBI do not understand this essential difference. Thus in Chili the popular elected Socialist regime of Allende was undermined by the CIA & the military dictator Pinochet was installed. The same thing is happening in Venezuela. Socialism "fails" because of US sanctions that impoverish the regime.

The thread title "Democratic socialists want a type of government that murdered 100 million people last century" is absolutely wrong! We want a true democracy - Government of the people, by the people for the people.

We need living wages to be paid to all employees, and the very rich & the corporations to pay taxes on their income & profits. All need to contribute from income, by taxes & national insurance to provide health care & pensions.

A great deal of expenditure could be made available by promoting international peace & security, rather than massive arms expenditure.

 

Socialism holds to government take over of the major business units, like energy and transportation, take over medical , and to have BIG taxes on people, all under "common public good!"

 

No. Socialism sets up publicly funded bodies to organise & run such businesses, with profits used to improve services. These are NOT government bodies.

 

Basically, takes away incentive and getting ahead, as all are set up to succeed equally!
Still lousy medical situation, and loss of capitalism and incentives spirit that helped make America great!
