Berkeley set to become 1st US city to ban junk food in grocery store checkout aisles

    It's Bezererkeley. The only music they listen to is Yanni. The don't sell toothpaste and soap either.

    A lot of store will have some candy free aisles -

    But then again the govt thinks they need to take the place of and or assist the parents in raising their children.

    When I told my kids "no candy" they knew that was the end of the conversation.
    I do not need the govt to tell me how to raise my kids.
    and if I need the govt to help me raise my kids like that- I have no business having kids.

    Hmm - whats that verse - Raise a child in the way of the Lord and he will not depart.

    I really have no problem with a local government making this kind of decision. The citizens will decide by vote whether or not it’s a good idea.

    Federal government making this decision would be gross abuse of power.

    Disagree - even local govt have no business telling a store what to do in this case.
    Now, if a bunch of citizens petition the store - thats fine - and if they go to another
    location than its the stores loss! The challenge (I hate to use the word problem)is that most
    people are too lazy and/or do not want to take the time and effort to make changes.

    Thus they want the village or town to make a law.

    Again - it is a matter of how parents raise their children.

    Local government does have authority to tell store what to do in this case. If people don’t like it, change the city counsel and mayor.

    I agree it’s silly. Let parents tell the kids “no”, if they don’t want them to have candy. BTW, kids aren’t the only ones buying candy in the checkout lane.

    It is a marketing strategy, just like putting milk and eggs at the back of the store so you have to walk by numerous products to get to it.

    Maybe next they’ll force stores to put milk and eggs at the front.

    Maybe legally - but they should not!!!!
    Businesses spend millions of dollars for store placement

    We are government of, for and by the people. People, by nature, will attempt to push the limits of the power they have. The citizens must be aware and take action to limit their power.

    If the citizens don’t care enough to pay attention and take action, they deserve what they get. Look at New York, Chicago, LA etc,

    It is best these decisions are made as close to citizens as possible. So, if a city counsel makes a decision like this, it is easier and faster for local citizens to make the change needed.

    No doubt that is true, but so does the right. Anytime you look to the federal government to enforce your ideas, we tend toward losing our freedoms.

    I used to know the author a long time ago when he lived here and we attended the same church. I haven’t seen him since he moved away years ago.

    We want limited constitutional government. What we have now is the bland leading the bland in an age of conformity. Human nature cannot be improved by making government into some sort of god, which I am sure that you agree with--that was tried in the French Revolution and it just turned into a blood bath. The American Revolution was toward a more human friendly society.
