If he wanted to exercise power he needed to have the backing of his party so he "had" to have party approved advisers.

Sabotaged is certainly correct. But who thinks Trump is a staunch Rep? He chose the GOP, because its party platform was the obvious one of the two to run on as a populist who wants to put America first. Trump has consistently shown that he is aware that a great many Reps are part of the swamp and who thus have no interest in their party platform. Their rejection of him will likely be their downfall, perhaps already is, and the party as well.

Perhaps staunch Republicans here and elsewhere think because President Trump ran on the Republican ticket and appears to want to keep on being labeled as a Republican.
