Mitch McConnell and Age Limits for Elected Officials

The incident with Senator McConnell today emphasizes the desperate need that the United States has to install age limits on elected officials. Older politicians should not be allowed to just hang on and hang on and hang on and hang on to power until their bodies give out.

I think that no one should be allowed to run for elected office once they reach the age of 75 years.

I don’t support age limits. I support term limits.

3 two year terms in the house

1 six year term in the Senate

No pensions!!!

Your limits are two short - it takes a couple terms just to get the knack of things.
I would recommend 5 terms for the house and 2 terms in the senate.

As far as pension - I would make it no govt paid pension.
Currently, it is partly paid by the govt and partly by the congressman.

This link gives the facts about benefits.

There is one thing, I would not have a problem - allow congressmen revieve health care at the VA hospitals - then they will know what the Vets go thu.
And while we are at it - let the military set up a medical clinic in Congress......

and one less things - just because the full congress is not is session - all congressmen are on several committees and sub-committees - not to mention, when they are in their home office and dealing with citizens who need help.

and if you think a congressman has an easy schedule - call his office and ask to shadow him for 30 days - then let us know.......

If the voters do not do a sufficient job of picking representatives, should be give the job to the Senator from Pennsylvania? Why do the political parties run poor (i.e. past their sell by date) candidates? Why are office holders re-elected term after term.

Have the public schools so dumbed down education that voters do not pick like-minded representatives, but simply vote for whoever they recognize, such as the Governator.

Because seniority gives addition assistance to the Congressman - choice assignments to committees, they can do more for constituents -.......

peace to you
I think there are limits in terms of age that affect a person's ability.....but that's just me.

I also don't support age limits because I believe the citizens should be able to make that choice in the election process.

Term limits and the election process should take care of homesteaders.

But they dont!

People will vote based on name recognition
as well as seniority - the more seniority - the more bacon a Congressman can bring home.

There, yes there, is the crux of the problem. As President Cleveland wrote in a veto message:

"The lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the government, the government should not support the people.”

Yep. That's why I want term limits.

But then again....if the voters want to reelect somebody.....

Then they will vote in the Congressman wife -.......
(Think (former) Gov Wallace - he was tern limit and then his wife ran. She won and in 1967 George was appointed as special assistant to the Governor.

I say restore the King. The King of America, a good dictator is better than Senate and House.

Why has the Constitution not been amended to limit the House to 10 terms and the Senate to 4 terms? That would still allow seniority to strengthen leadership and corporate memory, but over time we would have fewer figureheads instead of representatives.

That would be like saying - why don't you tell your boss to decrease your salary.
Why would Congress want to mess up their own careers?
Sure they had no problem to limit the President - since it did not effect them personally

Another one of my pet peeves is when they call congressmen "Leaders" I don't want my congressman to be a leader - I want him to represent me!

In fact, I would rater that the House and Senate elect a retired Congresman to be the Speaker/Pro Tem.

and as far as majority/minority leaders - the government should NOT pay extra for those positions - as they are political! If the Party wants to pay them - that would be another story.

Would you support doing away with having individual representatives and have the voters in each congressional district vote on the individual bills and the majority vote for that district would be registered on the House floor for that district?
