It's always been a strange balance. The infrastructure is larger than necessary for the military but other issues has kept bases open (like local economies).

Clinton basically gutted the military. But he refused to decrease the infrastructure because it would have a negative impact on local economies (but a positive one on a larger scope).

I saw a couple of recruiting adds recently encouraging the elderly to enlist. Now why would the military want an old fart like me…. Probably administrative I’m thinking. I’d be interested in flying drones but the army? No, I’m more of a Navy/ Marine type. Go down to Virginia coast then Pearl for a time…no hard stuff. Wonder if space force will be cut?

The Army can extend the age to 45 years old.

I had a friend when stationed in Germany who enlisted with an age wavier. I couldn't imagine going through Basic training at that age.

To top ot off, at the time you had to sign that you realized you wouldn't receive military retirement!

I will occasionally have dreams that I’m in basic training again, 45 years later. Even in my dreams I’m thinking “oh crap, there’s no way I can run anymore”

I always wake up smiling at the thought.
