Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good. - Ezekiel 16:49-50

    1. Pride
    2. Gluttony
    3. Laziness
    4. Uncharitable

And to make the long story short... They found nothing else better to do.

You missed “committed abomination before me”. Homos:uality is said to be an abomination before God.

    peace to you

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. - Proverbs 29:18

It is important that a healthy vision is pursued.

It was sexual perversion in general, not just homosexuality, and as evidenced by Lot offering up his daughters and at how quickly they reverted to incest after their escape Lot and his family were greatly influenced by the sin of Sodom.

    From the book of Jasher:

11 In those days all the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, and of the whole five cities, were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord and they provoked the Lord with their abominations, and they strengthened in aging abominably and scornfully before the Lord, and their wickedness and crimes were in those days great before the Lord.
12 And they had in their land a very extensive valley, about half a day's walk, and in it there were fountains of water and a great deal of herbage surrounding the water.
13 And all the people of Sodom and Gomorrah went there four times in the year, with their wives and children and all belonging to them, and they rejoiced there with timbrels and dances.
14 And in the time of rejoicing they would all rise and lay hold of their neighbor's wives, and some, the virgin daughters of their neighbors, and they enjoyed them, and each man saw his wife and daughter in the hands of his neighbor and did not say a word.
15 And they did so from morning to night, and they afterward returned home each man to his house and each woman to her tent; so they always did four times in the year.

The proverb is not speaking about individuals having a “healthy vision”, it is speaking of Prophets getting special revelation from God to guide people’s actions.

If every person just did whatever seemed right in their own mind, their would be chaos.

    peace to you

Point being… Unrighteousness begins something like…

    1. Pride
    2. Gluttony
    3. Laziness
    4. Uncharitable

Not at all as obvious evil. It may take a generation or two, but it can end up into something seen in Sodom and Gomorrah.

My point is that I have seen this particular passage used by some to dismiss the claim Sodom was destroyed (at least in part) because of se:usl deviancy. I don’t know if that is what you are doing or not, but you did leave out the reference to committing abominations before God.

    peace to you

My point is that most people leave out the first four…

    1. Pride
    2. Gluttony
    3. Laziness
    4. Uncharitable

How about we agree we should view the entire passage, in the light of other passages, and condemn all of it?

    peace to you

Probably because the evil did not start out as what you would call, “se:usl deviancy”

Really? So, you don’t believe scripture condemns hom:se:uslity?

Did I say that? Why did John the Baptist lose his head? For calling out the evils of divorce? What I am saying is that the evil can begin by simply listening to music that pumps up the ego… Leading to the more serious sins of fornication on down the road.

It is good for two virgins to marry and stay together until “death do us part.” Due to the hardness of heart Moses suffered a bill of divorce. Anything beyond that, including “to commit abomination” as stated in that passage, is evil.

Just to be certain, when you say “two virgins” do you mean one man and one woman?

The word “virgin usually refers to a young woman in scripture.

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. - Leviticus 20:13

But... The scripture in the OP deals mainly with the proud and the haughty spirit. Noting the righteous are not that way...

Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. - Numbers 12:3

For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. - Isaiah 66:2

When there are “lists” in Biblical Hebrew and Greek, the authors place greatest emphasis on the first mentioned or the last mentioned.

In Ezekiel 16:49-50, the last thing mentioned “haughty and committed abomination before Me” is separated from the others mentioned.

The term “haughty” refers to what Hebrews called “sins of the high hand” meaning they were deliberately sinning against God, knowing what they did was an “abomination” in the eyes of God.

In this passage, though all things mentioned are sins, the “terrible sin of Sodom” was the se:usl deviancy they committed, knowing it was sin in the eyes of God.

The same holds true for today, for those who commit the acts, and those who make excuses for them.

    peace to you

I think these 2 are the biggest issues with country Southern Baptist Churches (Not talking about the convention, they have bigger issues with them) today.

A bunch of gluttony, followed by laziness. And in many cases the laziness isn't just physical, but spiritual as well.

All born-again Christians, Baptists or not, ought to be redeeming the time with good works, spiritual growth and general labor.

Most Baptists are clear on the homosexuality being wrong, but I ain't never heard a sermon preached on eating far too much banana pudding or getting too big of a bass boat.
