16-year-old Marlana VanHoose, who sang the National Anthem before the UK vs Ole Miss women's game on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.

The Johnson Central student, who is blind and was born with Cytomegalovirus, got a visit at midcourt from UK Women's Head Coach Matthew Mitchell before the game.

"It was really moving," he said. "I told her before tipoff, it really brought tears to my eyes. It was the best performance we've ever had here at Memorial Coliseum. What an unbelievable voice on a little bitty girl like that."

Wow! She was really good! And she did that acapella, to boot. A lot of good singers can hide behind the soundtrack, but that just all her.

I had to look up that disease. What I found said that it was a common virus with most people having one before they are 40.

It said that the high risk groups with dangers of terrible problems accompanying it were the unborn, people with AIDS, and children with very low immune systems.

The symptoms of a CMV infection vary depending upon the age and health of the person who is infected, and how the infection occurred.

Infants who are infected before birth usually show no symptoms of a CMV infection after they are born, although some of these infants can develop hearing, vision, neurological, and developmental problems over time. In a few cases, there are symptoms at birth, which can include premature delivery, being small for gestational age, jaundice, enlarged liver and spleen, microcephaly (small head), seizures, rash, and feeding difficulties.

These infants are also at high risk for developing hearing, vision, neurological, and developmental problems.

Newborns can also contract CMV infection during or soon after birth by passing through the birth canal of an infected mother, consuming breast milk from a mother with the virus, or receiving a transfusion of blood donated by a person infected with CMV. Most of these infants show no symptoms of CMV infection; however, a few may develop pneumonia or other symptoms.

Premature and ill full-term infants who are infected soon after birth are also at risk for neurological and developmental problems over time.

Sometimes you just have to give a nod of recognition to reality and move on in peace.
