Following disclosure of the new Miami-Dade County budget that could slice some 600 police department jobs, the head of the police union is making dire predictions about public security.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s $6.2 billion budget request for 2014-2015 has some $64 million in cuts to various areas of the department. The proposed cuts, made public Tuesday, have some law enforcement professionals issuing stern warnings to the public.

“If the mayor’s not going to provide security, then my recommendation, as an experienced law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, is either buy yourself an attack dog, put bars on your windows and doors and get yourself some firearms because you’re going to have to protect yourselves,” said John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association to WSVN news.

The reason for the increase in self-reliance for Miami-Dade County residents concerned about their protection, Rivera said, is that, “We won’t be able to.”….

I like Sheriff Clarke. He's a no-nonsense, stand-in-the-gap kind of guy. Wonder if he'd like to move to Detroit?

Naw, they could never pay him. But he's the kind of guy they need. And Chicago. And Boston. And ...

He is impressive. I understand that he is considering a run for Milwaukee mayor in 2016.

Also...Though he was appointed to his current position by a Republican governor, he is running for reelection as a Democrat.

That's a purely political decision. He can't be elected in Milwaukee as a Republican. I don't think he's a political animal of any stripe.

I do not live near Milwaukee, but I am able to receive WTMJ-AM, a local talk radio station. The weekday-morning show host, Charlie Sykes, deals a lot with their local politics and has Clarke on frequently. He seems to be more interested in being his constituents' top cop than being a politician.

Clarke's own party hates him, and he gives the strong impression that he does not care.

Add: As for a Republican being able to win county-wide elections, before Scott Walker was governor he was Milwaukee County Executive.
