Should we be more focused on the gospel of Jesus or government coerced wealth redistribution?

Why do you think that Jesus never told the Roman government how to run their government?

Did Jesus not care about the poor? Is that why He never pushed for the government to be involved in wealth redistribution?

What does it mean to not be Americanized? Does it mean to act like Jim Wallis and denounce America while praising communist countries?

There you go again, misdirecting the thread. Just answer the question, as it is on topic. You said you support giving he poor jobs. So, that that mean you support raising the minimum wage such that they will receive a living wage salary?

Oh, wow! Jesus cared very much about the poor.

So your undersanding of the passage in Matthew:
has nothing to do with the poor, the sick, the homeless, etc.?

First, I already answered the question you need to go back and read through the thread. Second, falsely accusing me of misdirecting the thread just so you can avoid answering a legitimate question on topic for the thread is well noted as an avoidance of the question.

So Again I ask, What does it mean to not be Americanized? Does it mean to act like Jim Wallis and denounce America while praising communist countries?

The gospel of Jesus would support a living wage.

Wow! You cut out the first question which puts the second one in context in order to give this response that misrepresents what I asked.

    So again I ask:

Why do you think that Jesus never told the Roman government how to run their government?

Did Jesus not care about the poor? Is that why He never pushed for the government to be involved in wealth redistribution?

That does not answer my question, again I ask:

Should we be more focused on the gospel of Jesus or government coerced wealth redistribution?

The bible tells us to be happy, and thankful for our wages. It tells slaves to be happy, and serve their masters. You must not be reading the right Jesus.

    Hey CTB, just a note

You have a huge (and very questionable) assumption that raising the minimum salary would equate to receiving a living wage salary. This is true only if the increase does not devalue the income by also increasing what is considered a living wage (and devaluing any savings one may hold). I don't see how raising minimum wage solves the problem. But I welcome your explanation. Thanks.

    1. They would be able to live without government support.
    2. They would buy more, helping corporations make a profit.
    3. They would pay taxes ... a net increase for all levels of government
    4. Their children would be healthier, thus lowering medical costs to themselves and the government.
    5. It would raise many above the poverty level and this would reduce program costs as not as many people would qualify for these benefits.
    6. It would raise morale of workers as has been shown in companies that raised the minimum wage. Indeed some are going to raise the wage further as they have found the benefits out weigh the costs.

    That's enough for now.

If all of us really took what Jesus said seriously about how we are to treat others, preached it and we all lived it there would be no need for government social programs. So, yes, we should be very focused on the gospel of Jesus and his teachings. If we all took his teachings seriously and lived them we were not be so worried about wealth and material things. There would be no need for such self-interested concerns.

So it is your position that government coerced wealth redistribution is the gospel?

    Did I understand you right?

Thank you for your reply. We took very different economic classes. In mine, increasing a minimum wage typically inflates prices and decreases the value of the dollar. I know this, when a price of a part increases our prices increase (and that's just on parts, not considering things like FICA, FUTA, and Medicare). If you raise the minimum wage $5, for example, the employer has to make that $5 plus the increase in overhead associated with the pay raise in order to maintain a working margin. A company is not interested in more dollars, they are interested in profit. If a company cannot be profitable then they will not remain in business and will add to the unemployed. Increasing minimum wage does increase dollars, but it decreases profit (even with the cost passed on, it is inflated by the price of employment). What you end up with is a decrease in the value of the salary even though it is technically more money (your $5 pay raise equates to a loss in value).

What I was asking is how this could be avoided and still increase minimum wage. I simply do not see how it is a good option, but am open to legitimate suggestions.

That is a possibility. However if morale increases or if the new wage attracts better qualified workers productivity may increase enough to offset the increases you mentioned.

I agree. I am not sure that most folk realize that it is profit, not dollars that a company is interested in, at least most companies.

Yes, a company must make a profit to stay in business. However, as I said in the first reply if productivity increases it may offset increases expenses with the result being in favor of the company.

I believe it depends in the attitude of the workers, the motivation of the workers, the skill of the workers and the increased productivity.

Here is a link to an article I believe you will find interesting:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...u-s-minimum-wage-to-11-87-to-retain-workforce

All this is dynamic, not static and it is complex, not simple.

No, as usual your do not understand. My position is that if we Christians lived as Christ taught there would be no need for governmental social programs.

Ok you never answered my other question according to what I asked:

Should we be more focused on the gospel of Jesus or government coerced wealth redistribution?

    Which one?
