What an idiot this particular democrat is. Does he have any idea what kind of fiscal hula-hooping is going to have to happen to approve pay raises for military members serving in Afghanistan/Iraq?

How does he propose this happen? The fiscal system can't support it. How do you differentiate between an E-4 stateside this year, over there next year, and back here the following? Compared to his/her fellow E-4 who's here this year, over there for only part of next year, and then over there for most of the following year?

Yeesh. Just freeze all our pay, except for the hazardous duty pay we receive for being over there. Keep it non-taxed, as it currently is.

THEN think about the major difference between military and "standard" federal government workers: Military members are 24/7. Yeah, we take our weekends and holidays where we can get them; but I myself was pulling into the parking lot of the church just two days ago when I got the call that I was needed to come into work.

To call it "fair" indicates that this so-called representative of the people doesn't know the first thing about what some of the people he's supposed to be representing are doing for him and their country.

I am 100% pro military - but keep in mind our GI's are not exactly in poverty. Sure, we hear some horror stories, but its more of a case of overspending on wants.

I realize that a GI is subject to work 24 hours a day, but there are civilian occupations that require the same.
Now, when a GI is not given a pay raise, but Congress is....
Remember, a good portion of a GI pay is tax exempt. Don't look just at Basic pay, consider the entire RMC. You may not get rich, but you will not starve either.

Then again if we start with the folks inside the Beltway starting with the Czars and other political appointees...

Look, I am a middle class American Patriot who happens to work for the Federal Government. Quite a few of us did *NOT* vote for obama. And, did not support the stupidity of those inside the Beltway crowd.

But, we are even more impotent in these matters than you are because of the Hatch Act and some organizations strict enforcement of it in a PC way.

So, as a Vietnam Era Veteran and as a federal Worker think twice before ragging on those of us who take defending *YOUR* freedoms with our lives (if necessary) for granted.

As for *NOT* freezing Military Pay... Up til now that was the one bright spot left in all this madness.

Though shalt not muzzle the Oz that treadeth the corn. Or something like that.

And, remember in all this that niether the Demoncrats or the Repugnantcans have gone after all the stolen money the Wall Street Fat Cats have stolen from us, the Tax Payers.

The RMC doesn't cover the whole story. For example, in 2006, a family of 4 renting accommodation in Honolulu needs to earn $111,695 or 55% more income to maintain a lifestyle similar to a comparable family earning $72,000 in the continental United States. It's now 2010; the RMC says an E-4 with 3 dependents (family of 4) makes half the amount required for acceptable accomodation in 2006. With any luck, the E-4 will get base housing.

The DoD civilian is worse off; they don't get base housing. There are cost-of-living adjustments; but those only go so far. And electricity on Hawaii is expensive.

BTW: Kudos to rbell for thanking Salty for his service as a DoD civilian. The uniform guys come and go, and run off to play in giant sandboxes; and sometimes forget about the DoD civilians and even contractors who keep the ball rolling in our absences. Unsung heroes, who make sure the home fires stay lit. So thank you, Salty, for what you do.

Trying to fix the debt is a lot like going to heaven. Everyone wants to go there but no one wants to die to get there.
While I personally do not think the debt can be fixed and that we will in just a few short years become an economic pitiful nation worse then Mexico I do think we have to try. While I feel it is going to take some serious sacrifices for the American public I also feel the government leaders and their irresponsible spending has gotten us into this so they also need to take on serious sacrifices.
First everyone in congress, the senate, and the white house and supreme court should take a 25% pay cut across the board. Their insurance should cost them 50% of the premium and changed to a 80/20 package. Their retirement packages should be changed and them put on Social Security along with the same retirement rules as any citizen and having to pay the same benifit amounts while working. They should not get free health care after retirement, but should have to go on the same Medicare as the public.
No government retired employee should be allowed to draw more then one government check for retirement including retired military. This is just a start.

I'm a low level DOD employee and I'm not crazy about not getting a COLA raise for two years, but if it will help the country, I'm in. But to take money away from our troops is wrong. Someone said in here that don't deserve a raise and that they aren't in poverty. I spent 20 years in the Air Force and I never got rich, also I was required to move about every 3-4 years and at age 43 when I retired I had no home paid off and had to start a 30 year mortgage (my choice) which will put me in debt until'm 73. The majority of civilians don't struggle with this inconvenience, so please don't jump to conclusions that the military members are rolling in money.

I never said GI's do not deserve a pay raise. If they are in poverty its because they overspend. My first Army paycheck was $124.50 - per month - before deductions - my first BOQ was $60. Never was rich, but I had what I needed, and I did not indulge in expensive POV's, stereos, ect, until I could afford them. If you lived in base housing, you had a pretty good deal - I know - I also lived in govt housing. From your stats, you moved about 5 times in your 20 years. I spent 15 years on active duty and had no less than 8 PCS moves.
And I never said GI's were rolling in money. Though you did remind me of a Air Force T/Sgt, back in 1975 who was my instructor in a Personal Finance college class who told our class that he had enough money in the bank to buy 10 new cars, but he was still driving his '68 auto.
