I like it. Northerners move down here and buy up all our land with their inflated New York Real Estate values to the point where local folk can't afford property anymore. It's evil.

They should have to pay to have the privilege to flee the mess they created up North.

Agreed 100% I'm thinking it should be closer to about $10,000 but, that's exactly what's happening. In my State it's called "The Villages" and it's a cancer which is well on its way to destroying its third county. There's two things left: The Villages itself, and the run-down shacks and trailers that their servant class inhabits. It used to be a beautiful area to live.

Foot...I moved to SC from TN about 5 years ago. Paid about $1,500 for two vehicles. And I'm from SC.

That was property tax and fees (we pay property tax on vehicles each year). In TN we paid sales tax up front, so buying a vehicle is a wash. But moving here was an expense.

Now, I don't like filthy rich, smug folks who are living off Great grand pappy's slave money anymore than some smug broker out of New York. Those folk in Nashville can stay there, as can the the folk in NYC and Miami. But, if you have land, why are y'all selling to those jackels?

That's a complicated answer that involves NAFTA, Manufacturing base decrease, runaway crony capitalism and property taxes.

The short of it is that they're forced to sell because jobs are poor thanks to the Federal Government in the 90s. Most in my county are dirt poor. Most folk used to work as farmers or blue collar workers. When NAFTA hit in the 90s all of our blue collar jobs got sucked out of our county and the region except for a few. The few remaining are locally owned and doing their best to be fair employers, but the salaries average between 30k and 40k.

Some folk have started to sell their land starting in the 90s because they can't find good manufacturing jobs, and the other jobs in the county don't pay enough for property taxes. The people buying the land offered top dollar, often from New York or New Jersey and drive the property values up. They've got plenty of money to throw around.

The county then comes out to our farms after seeing these sales and says "Your farm is now worth twice as much as it was last year, therefore you owe twice as much taxes with the same salary". Plus the additional problem of our very few houses being bought as Airbnbs, which takes a residential structure and turns it into commercial and removes it from the housing inventory.

So I say make those wanting to move into the county pay a big up-front cost that proves they want to move into our area to be part of a community and they're not there to just make a buck.

Unregulated capitalism is a problem, isn't it. Free market where goods and services aren't regulated sure made Mexican labor attractive in comparison to US labor. Jobs in manufacturing dried up and a downward economic spiral hit hard. The disparity is real.

Unregulated capitalism is a problem, isn't it. Free market where goods and services aren't regulated sure made Mexican labor attractive in comparison to US labor.
It is, hence why I am a Distributist and a member of the American Solidarity Party rather than the Republicans. However, out of all the unregulated economic systems, Capitalism is the best. Distributism is even better ;).

Jobs in manufacturing dried up and a downward economic spiral hit hard. The disparity is real.

I don't think segregation caused neglect, I think crony politicians lining their pockets caused neglect. Politicians don't care about the color of people they're leeching off of. It can be poor whites in my part of Appalachia, or poor blacks stuck in the inner city with gun and liquor stores across from each other, and we're all equally leeched off of.

Does your state have a current use taxation system, whereby owners of farm/forest land can lower their taxes by agreeing to surrender the right to change the use to residential/commercial (or pay a fine to do so), or is Highest and Best Use the only taxation method?
Maine has both Open Space and Tree Growth taxation laws. I'm much more familiar with the latter, in which forest land entered into that system is taxed on the productive potential (for timber products) of the land. Participants must have an acceptable forest plan that includes timber products among the planned uses.

They should charge to be a citizen of such a great State as SC. We have to limit the immigrants fleeing the northern states. Otherwise we'd get people who don't like sweet iced tea and cornbread.
