A first-century fragment of Mark found?

This would be a big deal-if it pans out-for two reasons:

1. It would further affirm the accuracy of extant manuscripts against people like Bart Ehrman, etc

2. Mark has Jesus’ prediction of the destruction of Jerusalem and the desecration of the Temple in Mark 13…depending on the precise dating of the fragment this could be as big as the Matthew fragment or bigger.

Let me add, if this is the 'real deal', then it would also be interesting if this fragment contained anything past Mark 16:8.

Earliest Manuscript of the New Testament Discovered?

10 February 2012

Daniel B. Wallace

On 1 February 2012, I debated Bart Ehrman at UNC Chapel Hill on whether we have the wording of the original New Testament today. This was our third such debate, and it was before a crowd of more than 1000 people. I mentioned that seven New Testament papyri had recently been discovered—six of them probably from the second century and one of them probably from the first. These fragments will be published in about a year.

Looks liike we'll be reading about some more manuscripts in the future.

I doubt very much that we will know the full story on this for some time. I'm thinking months if not years. Independent academics are going to have to review the evidence and give their opinions. That will be done privately first. Archeology is rife with both forgeries and over-enthusiastic claims.
