A Hero Finally Recognized -- Eric Hartley: Picturing an Annapolis icon in a new light

He is the most recognized man in Annapolis and I know of no person who does not have kind feelings toward Carlester. He does have an untold number of nicknames. The one I like best is "The Annapolis Walker." No one, and I mean no one would dare harm this man. Everyone, and I mean everyone, who lives here would come to his defense.

Like thousands of others, photographer David Hartcorn had been watching Carlester Smith walk for decades - in Hartcorn's case, since he moved to Annapolis in 1981.

Smith is the man of a million nicknames who walks West Street virtually every day, smiling and carrying bags he uses to pick up trash.

My favorite, from Hartcorn: "One of the things I heard is that he goes down to the South River and picks up bags of clean air and brings them back and shakes them out" in Annapolis.
