Having covered the police/court beat off and on for 36 years, there's very little that surprises me. If you made up some of this stuff no one would believe it.

Not hardly. I once covered a trial in which the defendant admitted to drinking two fifths of gin and two 40-ounce bottles of beer and then driving 40 miles to town, where he stopped in the parking lot of a fire station to relieve himself.

The best one that I heard was from a local sheriff's deputy. Pulled over a car that was driving erratically one night. The driver's seat was occupied by two drunken love-birds caught in the act.

It happens. Hard to beat the story of the guy who showed up at the hospital after a testicle had been surgically removed and no memory of what happened ...

My boss would tell his driving class that a man was driving in Liverpool, NY with his 4 way flashers and going very slow. He then pulled into a C-Store parking lot, at which time the police came up to him and asked why his 4-ways were on. The man answered that he had been drinking - and wanted to be careful. The police then asked why he pulled over when he did The man replied that he was going to go in a buy a six pack.
Larry said that he thinks the charge the police wrote him up for was stupidity.

It's a running joke around the newsroom that criminal stupidity should be a chargeable offense when the statutes don't cover a particular crime.
