Many times believers confuse what God could do with what His word says He does.
The inspired word sometimes leaves the scope of the "all" (Greek "pas") up to those interpreting the verse. Romans 8:28 certainly does not say God makes all sin into something beneficial. Our misguided efforts to earn rewards, post salvation, can be burnt up as straw, thus yielding no benefit.

The sometimes unnecessary addition of "things" seems to expand the scope beyond of the contextual message. All the "things" in the contextual scope of Romans 8:28 are those God is implementing:
(1)His foreknow plan of redemption which predestined being born anew in the image of His Son, and
    (2) called those of His choosing into His kingdom, and
    (3) justified the individuals transferred with the washing of regeneration, and
    (4) lastly glorified them spiritually with eternal life.

Therefore, God causes all these things to work together for the benefit.... is probably the actual message of the verse.

    Romans 8:28 (My interpretive translation)

And we know that God causes all these things to work together for the benefit to those who love God, to those who are called (transferred into Christ) according to His purpose.
