Southern Baptists Hit by Gay Marriage Hoax
Officials with the Southern Baptist Convention said they have been the victim of an elaborate online hoax that included a phony news release announcing that the nation’s largest Protestant denomination had changed its position on homosexuality.
The release was sent to an unknown number of reporters and directed readers to a website designed to replicate the real Southern Baptist Convention website, along with working telephone numbers where individuals identified themselves as employees of the SBC Executive Committee.
“It is definitely a hoax,” said Roger Oldham, vice president for communication and convention relations for the SBC Executive Committee. “It seems to be perpetrated by an unidentified hacker who is trying to mimic the look of our SBC.net family of web pages.”

How could anyone with reasonable knowledge of the SBC even believe a hoax like this? I understand unbelievers maybe falling for it, but any Christian with even just a little understanding of the SBC would immediately question such a thing. The SBC is not perfect, but it is certainly not that far down the road that such a thing is even remotely possible right now.
In this world, I can see what it would have been believed..has nothing to do with believer or unbeliever... The website obviously looks legitimate..and there are churches who are pro-homosexuality..so its not complete impossible....

I left Southern Baptist churches when they started arguing over women being Pastors and music being contemporary and started using modern transliterations of the Bible.
So I didn't doubt for a minute that there could be a fight in the convention on such a topic. I bet there are those that would step forward and say "why not" - just like they did on Bible versions, on women Pastors and non-traditional music, all of which is to please "the world" and not to please the Lord.
No, I still can't believe anyone with a charitable and decent knowledge of the SBC would believe this hoax. Read the hoax - it says it comes from the Executive Committee - not some renegade liberal who proposed a resolution. It says more about the one believing the hoax - i.e., that they want to believe it.

Which traditional music did we get away from? I looked to find out what songs Paul sang but the Scripture didn't say. I even looked in the the KJV for it. Do you sing songs written after the 1st century? Or maybe you only sing the traditional songs of David?
You might want to read up on women pastors in the SBC... Here's a quote from the SBC website:
9. Can women be pastors or deacons in the SBC?
Southern Baptists have long valued the priceless contribution of women as they have ministered to advance God's Kingdom. The Baptist Faith and Message (BF&M) affirms the vital role of women serving in the church. Yet it recognizes the biblical restriction concerning the office of pastor, saying: "While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture." The passages that restrict the office of pastor to men do not negate the essential equality of men and women before God, but rather focus on the assignment of roles.
The Southern Baptist Convention also passed a resolution in the early 1980s recognizing that offices requiring ordination are restricted to men. However the BF&M and resolutions are not binding upon local churches. Each church is responsible to prayerfully search the Scriptures and establish its own policy.
We've included links below to the BF&M ("Article VI: The Church" applies), as well as a link to an article that we ran in SBC LIFE several years back addressing this issue. These should prove helpful in studying the topic.
The Southern Baptist Convention has not addressed the issue of all the available avenues through which a woman may serve, only the biblical restrictions concerning pastoral ministry and ministry requiring ordination. The potential opportunities for women to serve in vocational ministry within the SBC are indeed vast.

I remember news stories on the religion page of my local paper discussing the SBC fighting over women preachers. The article stated that there was a definite faction that opposed the continual lockout of women in regards to pastoring churches.

This is true. The SBC cannot enforce any doctrinal stand on any church. But what they can do, and have done, is that if a church calls a woman as senior pastor, they can be declared NOT in friendly association with their local/state or national convention. The SBC could not stop them from calling themselves a soutthern baptist church anymore than you could stop a church from calling itself an independent fundamental baptist church even if they called a woman as pastor.
You would know they weren't a real IFB church. I would know that a church calling itself a SBC church wasn't really if they called a woman as their senior pastor.
And just because there is a group that disagrees with the official doctrinal position of the SBC doesn't mean that the vast majority of SBC churches reject women as senior pastors and deacons.
You probably have people in your church who disagree with you about some issue or another, just like I have them in mine. Just because they are there doesn't mean that your church or mine believes what they do.
