Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - Pledging to work against forces of "militant secularism and pluralism" within their Christian denomination, conservative Anglican leaders formed a new umbrella organization here at the weekend.

The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) -- representing more than half of the world's practicing Anglicans -- wrapped up a weeklong meeting in Jerusalem, where more than 1,100 lay and clergy, including nearly 300 bishops, declared their allegiance to traditional biblical and church teachings and vowed to combat liberal trends, including the acceptance of homosexual leadership.

This sounds encouraging and I pray for their strength and that the Spirit of the Holy God will enable them to uphold their pledge.

I think it is time (if Christians have been so neglectful in the past,) that we move to pray and support those among us.... other Christians and Christian leadership.... when a stand is taken for the truth in God's Word. I also think it falls upon each of us to hold and support our leadership to the Biblical standards.

I applaude them but hope they/we won't have to leave the Anglican Communion, because it is TEC and the AC-Can who are technically in schism over Gene Robinson's consecration and New Westminster's blessing of SSRs and therefore they should be the ones to leave. They (TEC and AC-Can) may still be thrown out at the Lambeth Conference later this month but this is less likely now as many of the GAFCON Bishops are boycotting Lambeth so the conservative presence there will be weakened; still expect fireworks though. To be strictly accurate, the GAFCON Bishops do not (yet) constitute a 'breakaway church' and I hope (for the reasons above) they won't have to; they describe themselves more as an ecclesiola in ecclesia. +Michael Nazir-Ali is the one to watch on this side of the Pond...

Can you decode your abbreviations for those of us not familiar with Anglicanism? What is the Lambeth Conference and who is Michael Nazir-Ali? Thanks! :)

It is such a wonderful thing to see men of Faith standing on God's Word and proclaiming that sinners should repent and live according to His Word, "Go and sin no more". John 8:11

Sorry, Gold Dragon!

TEC = The Episcopal Church (US bit of the Anglican Communion)

AC-Can = The Anglican Church in Canada

SSRs = Same-sex relationships

The Lambeth Conference is a 10-yearly meeting of the Anglican episcopate (sort-of) ie: the Bishops/ leaders all get together to thrash out the Big Issues of the day

Michael Nazir-Ali is Bishop of Rochester (England, not New York!)
