Another New Translation

I came across the INTERNATIONAL STANDARD VERSION while researching an aspect of Greek grammar.

I'm more familiar with Hebrew than Greek and like the translation style of the preliminary Hebrew text.

Anybody familiar with it? Looks really interesting.

What makes the International Standard Version® different from other Bibles?

The ISV® is a New Translation, Not a Revision.

The ISV® is a totally new work translated directly from the original languages of Scripture and derived from no other English translation.

The translators of the ISV® have selected the English equivalent that most closely reflects the meaning of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. On my thread using a baseball diamond as an illustration I asked folks if it was getting rather crowded between plates 2 and 3 . I think there is not much elbow room . The translators are a little more than half way through the Old Testament at present . The New Testament is available . I will buy the entire Bible when it is complete . It is supposed to be more dynamic than the NIV , but more accurate . It will occupy the narrow confines between the TNIV and the HCS in my estimation . I know one of the translators -- Robert Morey . We shall see what the scoop is when we have it in our hands . Having hard copies of a translation is best . That way you don't have to take someone's word for it , right or wrong .

Re: ISV

In 1996 the International Standard Version New Testament was published by The ISV Foundation. As of June 7, 2004, approximately 30.4% of the Old Testament was complete -from History of the English Bible copyright 2003-2004 F. Keith Mincey

I was not aware the ISV had been finished. I don't know very much about this translation, but anyone who is interested can find it online at http://www.studylight.org (click link) where it is one of many Bible versions available.

And in the meantime, according to Wycliffe, there are still 4000 languages with not even a Bible portion in them.

America, wake up. You have too many Bible translations, too many Christian bookstores (the nearest one here is 2 hours away), too much popular Christian music that just puts money into the pockets of corporations (just like some of the Bible translations do), too many scholars with too much time on their hands and no burden for the world, and too many people who have been called to be missionaries but turned God down. :tear:

That's a poor god who doesn't have enough power to establish a person in his vocational calling . Of course the effectual call is --- well , effectual when it comes to salvation . God performs both callings without fail .

I'm glad to learn that all Christians obey God's call to ministry all the time. I never knew that--never read it in Scripture.:type: :saint:

I agree. How many more translations does someone have to come up with to get the Bible to say what they want it to say? I believe that the KJV is the one true Bible. I don't care if you translate it into chinese, italian, or french as long as it says what the meaning and the words stay the same. I don't like any of these new translations because they add words and/ take away words. Revelation 22:18-19, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."
I believe that everyone should just leave the Bible the way God put it. If they can't understand what it says then they are not saved. If they were saved then the Holy Spirit will guide them and reveal to them what the Bible says. God didn't make the Bible extremely easy to understand because we are to study and learn. 2 Timothy 2:15,"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

As for the ISV, I believe it has been around for a while... I have had it on e-sword for a few yrs now. I don't see a problem with multiple translations... as long as we use them... If you are KJVO, use it daily. If you use others... use them daily.

John when I read your post, I got an image in my head of a building imploding on itself.... That is what America will do if we don't start sharing what God has blessed us with. I agree with you John. We take too much for granted...

Quite franklly, there is no meaning of 'words stay the same' and
'translate' that will make your statement true.

This was EXACTLY the same argument made when the
Geneva Bible of 1587 faced the new translation of the
King James Version in 1611. In fact, the KJV wasn't even
popular until about 1700 or so.

BTW, this topic is about the INTERNATIONAL STANDARD VERSION,
not some other version.

Can the ISV add enough meaning to the study of God's Word that the ISA is spiritually worth the effort? Financially, producing English language Bibles has to be much more lucrative than going overseas . . .

OK, here is the way "God put it" :

ουτως γαρ ηγαπησεν ο θεος τον κοσμον ωστε τον υιον αυτου τον μονογενη εδωκεν ινα πας ο πιστευων εις αυτον μη αποληται αλλ εχη ζωην αιωνιον

This is in the original Greek, just the way God inspired it to be written...Do you understand it? If not then by your own confession, you must not be saved.

I thank God for translations, whether it be the KJV, or ISV that gives us God's words in our language. Too many people around the world have no Bible... We should be thankful that we have plenty to choose from.

I agree with the general tenor here - far too much work on the "high profit" English market and not ner enough on the needy languages.

Not faulting the ISV, don't know anything about it, but when are we going to say, "We have enough?"

Why aren't our high paid specialist types planting churches here in the 3rd largest mission field? Or, in the British Isles - the single most strategic location in the world?

They don't even have to rough it much. . .

And then a next generation of missionaries can expect to have Christian churches that can afford to keep them overseas . . .

10 - 15 years and many missionaries will be in financial hardship because we have neglected English speaking people.

Oh well, I might read the ISV sometime in the future. But, I think it is after reading the Bible in Spanish, the OT in Hebrew, and the Bible in German or French . . . .
