Anyone use a straight razor?

    Actually a shavette. I decided to give one a go.

    I found where normal razors are made to glide over the skin, streight razors are designed to glide about 1/16th of an inch below the skin. So nick ointment and 10 to 15 towels are a must.

    As with most tools I expect it takes some practice to develop good skills wherein you can cut down on the blood. Until then, I'd suggest drinking plenty of fluids and keeping the blade sharp by staying off your legs.

    I have used a straight razor years ago. The trick to keeping from nicking yourself is pulling completely straight. If you pull sideways at all you will cut yourself.

    To get where you pull straight, learn by cleaning shaving cream off a balloon like the barbers used to do in barber school. That and strop the blade before use religiously.

    If for nothing else, do you have an ER close at hand?

    May I say that the Gillette Company has pretty much perfected the close shave experience. Unless you’re a professional trained barber you might want to reconsider.

    My grandma used grandpa's razor strap to keep us boys in line. I have it hanging on the wall now as a memorial.

    Well, I have considered one for the last 50+ years, but never could talk myself into taking the plunge; 83 now, so probably never will at this point. :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

    Razor straps don't discipline boys, mamaws w/razor straps discipline boys...:D
    The strap hanging on our wall is a memorial to mamaw.
