Another effect of these large ecclesiastical councils was the gradual abolition of that perfect equality which reigned among all bishops in the ORIGINAL, SCRIPTURAL ORGANIZATION of JESUS’ CHURCH ASSEMBLIES, in primitive times.

Continuing:

This occasioned the creation of a new order of ecclesiastics, who were appointed, in different parts of the worlds as heads of these newly invented universal FALSE ‘church’ assemblies of SATAN; …and whose office it was to preserve the consistency and union of that immense body, of this
newly invented universal FALSE ‘church’ assemblies of SATAN whose members were so widely dispersed throughout the nations.

Such were the nature and office of the patriarchs, among whom, at length, ambition, having reached its most insolent period, formed a new dignity, investing the bishop of Rome, and his successors, with the title and authority of prince of the patriarchs.”3

The ancient method of ecclesiastical government seemed, in general, still to subsist. While, at the same time, by imperceptible steps, it varied from the primitive rule, and degenerated toward the form of a religious monarchy. For the bishops aspired to higher degrees of power
and authority than they had formerly possessed, and not only violated the rights of the people but also made general encroachments upon the privileges of the presbyters. Which, however, were in general so obscure, that they themselves seemed to have understood them as little as those to whom they were delivered.
