Baptist in a Non-Baptist Church

    Some justify partnering with MacArthur because he is Baptistic. Baptist is more than a name on the church sign.

    OK Tom, I'm now going to appeal to the only infallible resource which liberal baptists trust...that's right...the Oxford English Dictionary!

    The adjectival form of "baptist" is "baptist". According to The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (p 179) "baptistic" is not a word.

    Leave it to the Liberals! First they abandon their bibles, then they abandon their doctrine, then they abandon their history, and now they have abandoned their infallible dictionary! :rolleyes:

    The complete Oxford English Dictionary, on page 660 of the A-B volume has entries for both "Baptistic" and "Baptistical."

    Repent! Repent! You Liberals must REPENT! Return to your original Oxford English Dictionary! :D

    But the dictionary has inconsistencies. And the dictionaries were written by men. So how could they be infallible? And also.....

    Since you appealed to infallibility, I decided to give your side's opinion :D :D :D :cool:

    Tom - I thought you might enjoy the chance to reverse roles.

    Thomas - is there an "archaic" or a "rare" next to those entries. Generally, when a word is in the OED but not in the 2-volume Shorter OED it's because the word is archaic or exceedingly rare.

    Just curious, and thanks for checking. One of these days I'll invest in the full OED.

    Josh, no, the words are not archaic or obsolete. The reason the Shorter OED is shorter is that little known or little used words are left out along with most of the philogical entries. [​IMG]

    Evangelical Free Church of Casper began with Baptist roots. Our ifb churches here split with regularity, and this was an offshoot who got tired of some of the things going on at that church.

    (BTW, a few years later, the folks who started my home church Liberty Baptist, split away for similar reasons).

    They had a pastor and youth pastor, 3 "elders" and 5 deacons. The preaching has fallen on the "elders", and 2 of them + deacons + elected others are on a "pulpit search committee" to seek a new pastor. Youth pastor is leaving in a couple weeks, so they will be without ANY pastoral leadership.

    I am preaching there again this Sunday (4/28) and have met with the men this week to give them some practical advice for seeking a new man. Will probably work with them throughout the summer until a new man can arrive on the field.

    Thanks for the input and thoughts. I questioned a young man who had finished his MABS in our school here in Casper about his going to work in a "Berean Fellowship" church. Know he is doing well, as they are also "baptistic". Hope folks give me the same benefit of the doubt in my efforts to help this struggling congregation in a time of real need.

    Let me ask you guys something. If you were invited to speak in a catholic church for a few months that the attendance was way down and because you are speaking the church would bring its attendance back up, would you accept it? I think you must consider if this church alines itself on the authority of scripture do you think God would have it prosper. If you believe God wouldn't based on what the scripture teaches, then don't take the position. His will for your life will not contradict scripture.

    I wouldn't speak in a Catholic church just to "bring attendance up" for a few weeks. I'd go once, share the gospel, and share the Biblical principles of reformation, and then not be allowed back :D

    And please, no comparison between a Catholic church and an Evangelical Free church. Just read through the constitution and doctrinal statement. Just like a Baptist church (even pre-trib) EXCEPT on baptism, they do not require it for membership. They do recommend it and say it is only an ordinance, not a sacrament.

    I could never pastor such a church full time, as I am in total disagreement on the baptism issue. I met with the folks and asked who were members there who were not immersed as believers, and there were NONE!

    BTW, to set the record straight, I am serving as an interim, preaching each Sunday and doing visitation, hospital, calling on shut ins. Maybe I should resign the BB??!??!! :eek:
