Burger King saves a seat

Steve Mercarter was hit by a train and killed in September. He had lost touch with his family, but Burger King workers looked out for him for the past 10 years. When they found out he died, they made a memorial in one of his favorite booths.
He never asked for anything.

That was Steve.

They didn’t know his last name. They didn’t know where he lived. But for 10 years, Steve came nearly every day, sometimes twice a day, to the Burger King at the corner of Geddes and West Genesee streets in Syracuse.
He’d show up in the freezing cold at 4:30 a.m., before the restaurant opened.

Sometimes, they had to remind him to change his clothes and take a shower. They had to remind him to
dress warmly.
Steve had been on the train tracks behind Destiny USA, police said. A freight train was coming toward him after 5 p.m. Sept. 24. The engineer blared the horn over and over. Steve stayed on the tracks. His back was to the train.

The train engineer could not stop. He was too close.

The locomotive plowed over Steve, killing him instantly.

They don’t know if it was suicide or drugs, Steve’s sister, Nancy Intorcia said. The police are still investigating, she said.

Steve was not homeless, but he had lived on the fragile edge of mental illness and drug addiction for decades, his sister said.

Intorcia said she had not seen him for at least 15 years. Their mother, Rose Mercarter, searched for him, but could not find him.

What they never did was ask him to leave. Steve was quiet. He’d just get his sandwich, sit by the window and watch the world.

“He was part of the woodwork here,” said Sue Spencer, the Burger King manager.

On Sept. 25, Steve did not come. That was weird, but not alarming. Sometimes, Steve missed one day. But then, for several days, Steve did not come.

They started asking around, Spencer said. They started worrying.

Then the police came. They had an answer, Spencer said. Steve was 49-year-old Steven Mercarter and he was dead.

This was a sad story I weep for the family of Steve and his workers what a tragedy and it is nice that Burger King set up a memorial but I serve a merciful God and to me... Steve has a better seat... Brother Glen:)

2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Btw... I didn't know Steve and his kindness didn't get him there but his kindness shows he belongs there!

"his kindness shows he belongs there"???
Sorry, but while God is merciful, he is also holy, holy, holy. Kindness does not show we belong in heaven. While I understand your sentiment, I also find it unproductive to speak falsely just because of sentiment.

God judges by the heart not by our human standards. He is a merciful & loving God.

God judges by His standard of holiness. All humans fall short of this standard. God is loving and merciful to whom he chooses to be merciful and loving.
*Romans 9:18*
So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

As I said God is loving and merciful, so the question for you is: who are you to judge how He deals with His creation. God will judge each by the light that they have been given or do you not think He is a just God and a Savior. I do.

God does what he wills. My contention is not with God. Instead it is with you and others who neglect the wretchedness of the human condition that means all our works fall far short of God's holiness.
God is therefore fully determining to whom he extends mercy and to whom he does not. Our personal opinion about how kind a person was or was not is irrelevant and meaningless to what God has done.

In the article is there any indication that Steve had been redeemed and his sins ransomed? Just sitting quietly at a Burger King everyday does not mean anything other than that he was a creature of habit. For anyone to project that Steve deserved God's mercy by his meritorious kindness is not ever taught in the Bible. Therefore I will not join in silly sentimentality that somehow kindness merits God's mercy. That sentimentality is theological worthlessness. If you choose to hold that sentiment that is entirely on you.

Austin you seem to be projecting your own personal views into this thread. Did I say that he was saved NO what I did say is that I am not the judge, God is. What He does with His creation is His right. You continue to deny that God really is sovereign and because He is loving and merciful and He actually looks at the heart He could have saved him and what you or I think really does not matter does it.

Here we agree. God is the judge and what He chooses to do is always good.

I am not the one who said, "his [Steve's] kindness shows he belongs there [in heaven]"

But perhaps a lack of kindness shows we don't.

1 John 4: 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

I agree with Jon and Austin argue with scripture... Then study Matthew 25 31-40 and tell me what did these saved sheep did for Christ?... Nothing... And he calls them brethren because they showed the agape love of God by what they do for others, just as Jesus did for others... Sheep are not always found in the church!... We don't do good because we changed ourselves, we do good because we were born from above... Brother Glen:)

Btw... I noticed this was in News and Current events Salty and its starting to drift to Theology you can move it there or leave it here... It's up to you... Brother Glen

Glen, tell us how you exegete this passage, since you bring it up as some prooftext. Then tell me how it relates to Steve whom the people at Burger King only knew for the hour or two per day when he sat at the booth. How do you extrapolate that he was a good man from the story when he was estranged from family, struggling with drug abuse, and showing no deep care for others.

Sentimentality is not something that gets a man God's mercy.

*Matthew 25:31-46*

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

No doubt it was kind of the Burger King people to let Steve sit in their restaurant and to raise a memorial to him but what he needed was someone to witness to him or pass him a tract or a Testament., and perhaps to invite him to come to church.

Austin you are still asking for man to make a judgement call as to whether Steve is with God or not but that is not our position. God is the one that makes that choice and He is always just in those choices.

Did you happen to notice what was not listed in these verses? You heard the gospel message and believed in me. It is not those words that save you it is your relationship with God. Thankfully God looks at the heart of a man. God judges the character of a man by his actions not by his words.

Nope. I am not.
I am stating, as God's word states, that man is desperately wicked. Therefore no man is kind enough to ever belong in heaven. This is the fact stated by God himself. If you cannot accept this truth, it is only due to your incomprehension and nothing else.
Do you fail to grasp how wretched humans are, Sliverhair?

*Jeremiah 17:9-10*

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

What man gets from God is God's damnation. That is the fruit of man's deeds.

As to Steve, we do not know if Jesus redeemed him. But we know his redemption did not and could not come from him being a kind soul. We don't even know if he was kind. We only know he came to BK everyday

Austin do you remember these verses? You should as you posted them. What I have to ask is did you actually understand what Christ was saying with these words as from what you continue to write I think you actually missed what He was saying.

Mat 25:34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Mat 25:35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;
Mat 25:36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.'

Are you not the one that keeps saying "But GOD" and yet you struggle with letting God be God.

Isa 45:21...A just God and a Savior; There is none besides Me.
Isa 45:22 "Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

This is the God of the bible, the just God that wants all to be saved 1 Timothy 2:3-4 but He is not the God that you keep putting forward. Why is that Austin? Do you think He can't save whoever He wants? Stop looking at what the man could do and focus on what God can and does do. He saves.

Perhaps you didn't quite read the passage and understand. Here's an important statement Jesus makes.
Mat 25:34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

We have no idea whether Steve was saved or not.
Notice that neither the sheep nor the goats recognized that they had done anything better than the other group. The difference was the sheep inherit the kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world.

You are assuming that the only way God can save someone is if it is done according to your calvinist view. Remember God is sovereign why do you not let Him be. The kingdom that has be prepared is for all those that will trust in Christ you are making an assumption based upon your calvinist theology that these had to be chosen before the foundation of the world. That is a wrong assumption.
