Calling States

The whole idea of calling a state for one candidate or the other as soon as the poles close but with less than 5% of the vote counted is ridiculous. I would rather ALL the poles be closed before the "results" are announced even if it means we have to wait until tomorrow before we know. I am convinced that early calling of eastern states influences the voting in the western states. No references or stats. Just personal opinion.

Early election predictions based on a small sample can be misleading because the samples often represent only a small demographic that is not representative of the whole.
The larger and more diverse the sample size, the better the prediction.
A 5% diverse sample would be enough to provide an accurate prediction.

But those predictions are based on past performance of several elections- with dozens of considerations.

Just personal gut feeling. We do know that @ 90% of the MSM are pro-Dem. Whenever an eastern state is leaning Democratic they tend to call them sooner that when one is leaning Republican. I understand they factor in which districts have reported. But in my opinion, and only my opinion, enthusiasm is usually contagious. Many folks want to be on the winning side. So I think early calls for one party and later calls for the other can influence some voters.

So I think early calls for one party and later calls for the other can influence some voters.
It has also worked against the front-runner in the past by encouraging people that the race is already won, so western turnout is lower than expected and an upset can happen (in past elections).

I think both sides are pretty motivated in this election (for and against ... Donald Trump and/or the Democratic Party Platform). Joe Biden is just not an exciting candidate. I expect record turnouts and very few minds changed from a week ago. It was a very polarizing election cycle.
