Before we all get to carried away, lets think carefully about exactly what a "Militia" might be like in the Phillipine Islands. Consider the Militias in the Sudan and what might happen on both sides of those.

The historical meaning of "militia" from the British-American tradition, was that every male in the village (county, shire, whatever) was called upon by the local or other authorities to defend the area or respond to some other threat. A well regulated militia, to borrow Madison's phrase from the 2nd amendment, combines the concepts of an armed citizenry with some degree of government regulation (the militia does not call itself out, but must be called out by some recognized authority). By that understanding, the racist militias around the world and the fat forty set here are not really militia.

Major B is correct! We see the real Militia in the form of the National Guard and Army Reserve and the Police and Sheriff agency and their reserves. The thought of the Government of the United States "calling" every Tom, Dick, and Harry out with their little "Pea Shooters" against the "Red Coats"--just isn't gonna happen anymore!

Interesting how things have changed in the U.S. these days.

Our freedom was won in most part by militias, and these militias of the revolution were made up of mostly Christian men, and many platoons and companies were led by Pastors.

The National Guard is no longer a true militia. It is just another branch of the federal government.

If the tradition of militias were still in effect today, the federal government would not have become the power drunk monstrosity it is today.

Checks and balances, checks and balances.....

Many of the founders did not like the idea of a national Army. They feared it would become another "Kings Army", doing the will of the king. They believed in state militias, who would pull together in times of crisis. This was another form checks and balances.

I for one believe in militias. In fact, if you go into the U.S. CODE, Title 10 it reads:

Sec. 311. - Militia: composition and classes

    (a)

The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

    (b)

The classes of the militia are -

    (1)

the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and

    (2)

the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia

Notice there are two catagories of militia, the organized (Fed) and the UNORGANIZED (private citizen). So by authority of the US CODE, TITLE 10, SEC 311, you can be a part of a citizen militia.

Not many people even know what the US CODE is, s not many people now about this small section of the CODE.

Yet the Militia being discussed here is from the Phillipine Islands perspective and is not the same.

That's very true. But what if the playing field is leveled and the regulars (even the best of the best) are forced to pay for their own equipment, arms, and ammo, and get their own training at their own time and expense? I think the militias would slaughter them, because most of the regulars would be AWOL. Even a rag-tag band of Civil War reenactors would put them to shame.

    Suppose you're right, JeffM??

    (1) Who ya gonna fight?? People who don't agree 100% with your form of government?? If thats the case, the fight would start down in the BB's Politic forum---you can get into some real scraps down there just mentioning that "Dub" drove his Limo past your front driveway!!

    (2) Who's gonna be your leader?? And suppose you get halfway to your objective and your leader "runs for it!!"(turns coward)

    (3) What cha gonna do when your enemy comes at cha with---say---a French Mirage jet and there you are with your single shot .22cal Squirrel gun?? Its hard enough to hit a target running at 5mph at 100 yards with that .22---much less a Mirage doing 850mph!!

    (4) What cha gonna do when he backs you up into a corner and you've got another "Bastogna" on your hands and you don't have but about a few more rounds of ammo left and you don't know the telephone # for the 101st Airborne---you can't call Patton or Bradley up and ask them to bring you "some relief"----I mean, can you imagine even if your militia got through to Army headquarters and then you have to start explainin' who you are and what you're doing and where exactly are you at???

    (5) If your enemy raids you---and then squirms off to some foreign country somewhere----how you gonna find him with your little Militia----you gonna "Comender" a Boeing in the name of your Militia?? Pirate the USS Teddy Roosevelt??

If you study that code reference that JeffM gave---you'll probably discover that its true!! The Government probably does maintain a true militia(no vigel ante stuff)---that Militia is maintained through what is called a "Draft"---a nasty, nasty word for the Hippie Diehards and Democrats to pronounce----but the Ready Militia "Draft" system worked quiet well during the Second World War---on through Korea and Vietnam!

Personally, I prefer the current system---with the possibliity of reinstateing the draft---if I hafta fight---I want the government to give me enough weapons and ordinance to where I can go and "do somethin' about it"----I don't need to be in a situation where there's a bunch of us Militia men fightin' and we're hollerin' back and forth

"Ya got any more .30-30 cartridges??"

"No, man! All I have is these Remington .380's!"

"Looorrrrrrd have MERCY---here the enemy comes with a Banzai attack---and here I am---ain't got no bullets to fit my rifle!"

Can you imagine your ordinance chief talking with the supply chief

    Ordinance: "I need ammo! .380! .243! .280! .30!"

Supply: "Dude! Sorry! All we have is 7mm left!"

Yet the Militia being discussed here is from the Phillipine Islands perspective and is not the same. </font>
Dear Ben,

    1. The term "Philippine Islands" is an old term used during 1902-1946 when Americans were the governing authority. Now it is simply called the Philippines. :D
    2. There are no militias in the Philippines, just Abu Sayyaf Muslim terrorists.

    </font>
I'll tell you what Roy Boy, I would have to agree with Major B, our Millitary are highly qualified, and trained, they are doing a spectacular job in Iraq, and all over the world today, the real job for the militia today is not to fight with guns worrying about some forien envaders comeing to get us, but to fight in the court system, and protect or constitutional , civil rights, just like the NRA , and SASS are doing, and I'm sure other militia groups out there. I like JeffM's "Kings Army" statement too, but I reconize our need of the fedral armed forces as well.

Some militia units fought well, most did not. Some guerilla movements (Francis Marion, for example) fought well, some did not. The main bulk of the fighting and dying was done by the regular continental army raised, trained, and led by George Washington.

    </font>
I can't see where I disagreed with anything that Major B said.

Given how easy it is for militias to be infiltrated, I'm not sure how effective they would be as a deterrant against internal tyranny. The way that they could prove effective is causing an enemy to divert resources that are needed in other areas, thus weakening the enemy in some areas.

Foreign agression will most likely come at the invitation of our own government, when they ask for U.N. troops to help quell citizen unrest within our own borders. The reason for such a request will be that our regular and reserve forces are already heavily committed overseas and none can be spared for use at home. Another advantage to having foreign troops to administer martial law is that they will feel less inhibited to shoot U.S. citizens than our own troops would.

The NRA has become quite a compromising bunch in recent years. http://www.thenewamerican.com/tna/2000/06-05-2000/vo16no12_nra.htm

Try Gun Owners of America for a more stable, non-compromising gun lobby.
