Compared to European parties the Democrats truly are right wing Bro Curtis.

Wot Roger sed. Are any of the guys you cited Curtis in favour of a National Health Service (what you would call 'socialised medicine')? If they aren't, then they are to the right of the Conservative Party here on that issue.

"false. if the income tax rate was 50 per cent plus just for medicare, I could not survive..........period!"----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think that is false. I did not say it was just for medicare, but my understanding is that the income tax rate in Canada is 50 percent or better.

"Bunyon, that's strange because from our perspective the US is pretty right-wing, both Republicans and Democrats."-----------------------------------------------------------------------

    That only makes sense right?

    They all favor socialized medicine.

I am happier than ever to be an American.

Do you mean by that "free medical care for all, regardless of ability to pay or cost of that care"?

The free medical care would be paid for by taxing the rich at a 70% rate. Exept in their case, where most of their fortunes are in other country's banks.

As our care system sits, I cannot find anyone who was refused treatment, or medicine, because they couldn't afford it.

Why such a high rate of tax? We manage it - albeit with waiting lists for non-urgent treatment - with a top rate of income tax of 40% and an overall tax burden of around 42% of GDP.

OK, so I'll concede Kennedy and Co are somewhere round about our Conservative Party - but they're about as right-wing as you get here, unless you want to vote for the neo-nazi BNP.

Like I said, thank God I'm an American.

If you read "Dude, where's my country", by Micheal Moore, that's a pretty good representation of where our Democratic party sits.

Every single party in Ireland is FAR to the left of the US Democrats.

Not sure how the Democrats compare to Canadian parties.

Curtis, to respond to your two posts:-

I've read quite a bit of Moore, and would say that he's to the left of the Democrats (he supported Nader over Gore in 2000); he certainly thinks the Democrats are to the right of him. He also thinks that there is not much to choose between the Democrats and the Republicans (funnily enough, there are many posters here who seem to think the same thing, but usually for opposite reasons!).

The BNP is still active; no MPs but 24 local councillors (don't know what the US equivalent of those is) at the last count. You may be getting it confused with the National Front which was pretty active during the '70s but with very similar aims and largely the same people involved (albeit like most extremists, they tended and still tend to fight amongst themselves more than against 'the enemy').

Not only did the Canadian parliament allow gay perverts to get "married" they also passed a law (C250) making it illegal to upset gays by telling them what the Bible says about their perversion and calling them to repentance. It is only a matter of time before the pro gay govt. here in the UK does the same.

    Kind regards to all.

It is not. The federal rate is 29% for the highest tax bracket (taxable income over $115,000). The provincial rate varies, so the combined amount for the highest tax bracket is anywhere from 39% (Alberta) to 48.64% (Newfoundland & Labrador).

I was told that by a Canadain doctor who got married and moved here but still advocated the Canadian system. He said he had to pay 50 percent, perhaps he meant a business tax or something but I thought he said income tax. But I'll defer to you, Mercury.

There was the study done that determined that 50% of bankruptcies in the US were related to medical costs.

Public hospitals are required to accept all emergency patients, but private hospitals and doctors can and do refuse. Routine care can be hard to obtain for poor people - mental health care can be near impossible.

My husband's cousin is a doctor in rural Alabama because no US doctors considered it worth their while to practice there.

I've posted it a couple times before but didn't save the link so it will take me some time to find it. The study, iirc, was done by Harvard and published in JAMA. When I find it, I'll post it.
