CDC Study: Use of Firearms for Self-Defense is ‘Important Crime Deterrent’

“Self-defense can be an important crime deterrent,”says a new report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The $10 million study was commissioned by President Barack Obama as part of 23 executive orders he signed in January.

“Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was ‘used’ by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies,” the CDC study, entitled “Priorities For Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence,” states.

The report, which notes that “ violent crimes, including homicides specifically, have declined in the past five years,” also pointed out that “some firearm violence results in death, but most does not.” In fact, the CDC report said, most incidents involving the discharge of firearms do not result in a fatality.

And the main reason for having a gun is to protect you from a tyrannical government. And the twentieth century records show that governments caused the deaths of tens of millions of their own citizens worldwide.

There you go. You don't need your guns to protect you from criminals. You need your guns to kill cops. Nice to know.

I would recommend a read of the CDC report, but that would be way too much trouble and too troubling. It's an interesting read but not one easily digestible for Pat Robertson's minions (although it's hard to believe there are too many left).

Wow, do you jump to conclusions or something? I said that guns were protection from a tyrannical government and in the last century tens of millions of people died at the hands of their own governments. For example, all dictatorships such as in Germany try to confiscate guns.

From this article:

The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council released the results of their research through the CDC last month. Researchers compiled data from previous studies in order to guide future research on gun violence, noting that “almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year.”

This wasn't a new study. It was a compilation of older studies by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council released through the CDC. The CDC is constrained by a GOP law to not spend any federal money on firearm research.

The Law That's Keeping Congress From Getting The Facts On Gun Violence

The mass shooting in Las Vegas has resurfaced calls for stricter gun control laws — but one law could be hindering Congress from truly addressing the issue.

It's called the Dickey Amendment, and it effectively prevents the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from researching gun violence.

The CDC used to sponsor research into gun violence — just like it does for smoking, HIV/AIDS and other public health hazards. That lasted from 1986 until 1996 when the Dickey Amendment was passed on a budget bill.

The law stripped the CDC of the funding it was using to research firearms and blocked it from spending any money to "advocate or promote gun control." That was enough to scare off any researchers worried about losing federal money from conducting further studies.

This is potentially problematic now as lawmakers attempt to find solutions to combat the nation's gun problem. A nonpartisan study from the CDC could help lawmakers decide potential solutions to prevent violence caused by guns.

Former President Obama directed the CDC to research the issue shortly after the Sandy Hook mass shooting. But the agency still hasn't been willing to risk its budget.

I would recommend you read CMG’s post again. He said nothing like what you posted.
