The big problem is that we now import a large percentage of our country's food supply. We used to be the "Bread Basket" to the world, not that I think Americans should be. That means we are buying produce from other countries who do not have as stidently pure regulations when it comes to safe growing and handeling practices. I read somewhere where a country was using human waste as fertilizer, then shipping that produce to America, uncleaned. Several people became deathly ill. We would all benefit by once again turning this country back towards producing our own food, no more counting on others to supply us with, say, strawberries in the middle of March.
DH and I are organic growers. I can go outside right now, pull a carrot up, simply rinse off the dirt, and eat it right there. No chemicals to worry about, and I won't get sick, either !

    love,

    Romulas

Locally farm land is disappearing for housing or new industry. Right up the road used to be over 100 acres of farm land, now it's factories and warehouses. This happens a lot here, we recently went for a ride in the country and found a lot of new houses where food producing farms used to be. Now I know out west they have a lot of really large farms though.
We don't have the option to grow our own food, organic or not.
If we're going to import fresh foods there need to be standards, apparently stricter standards then there currently are.
I remember a year or two ago there was contaminated food, and can't remember which it was, I think it was fast food resturants, that was grown here in the US.
