I got this from my sister (hard-core Campbellite). She said she wouldn't let her children learn to play chess because it was "against God" or something. She mentioned something about how the pieces have "power", etc. I'm not sure what kind of "power" these little pieces of wood are supposed to have. Just wondering if any of you have heard anything like this. Maybe someone here knows a little about Campbellite/COC and can give me some insight.

I was born and raised in the Church of Christ and I have never heard of such before. When we had an active club in this area we used the Church of Christ annex where I was a member to play chess some.

The chess pieces have different "powers" within the game of chess. But nothing outside of those 64 squares, I assure you. [IMG]

Ahhhhhh! I'm not sure what Joseph means here, but I do know about Bob Larson. I remember someone once asked Larson whether he had to pay long distance charges when "demons" called him. I'm sorry, but I think that's hilarious. Bob Larson begs for money, but last I heard he bought a very expensive home in Aspen. Bah.

Did Larson say something about chess players?

Now, how could chess be "against God?" Maybe by having a king besides Jesus. Maybe by having bishops who rank above knights in power. Maybe by the exploitation of "pawns" to protect the nobles. Maybe by having exceptional rules for certain situations ['castling;' en passant]. Maybe by use of the term "mate."

Actually, the ones who might be expected to oppose the game for its rules and terms apparently do not... communists (class system), Democrats (pawns less freedom than nobles), Republicans (rulers hereditary, not elected), feminists (trapped king ends game; trapped queen does not), Baptists (bishops should not have power of nobility), animal rights activists (knights shouldn't 'abuse' horses by riding them into battle), liberals (black and white are equal; no affirmative action by giving black team an extra piece), "children's advocates" (the game is essentially about war).

Absolutely, brother. And "Monopoly" encourages greed and makes people want to bankrupt their friends. Actually, ANY game takes away time from praising the Lord and doing His work, so let's burn them all in a pyre with all non-Bibles too just to be safe.

The game of Clue encourages lying and murder! Conga actually is a voo-doo game and when you squish the play-doh, African God's are apeased! Trivial Pursuit is idle hands and well... we all know what that'll cause!

Checkers?? The red stands for blood and the black stands for evil and the black and white squares ... it's a racist game! Don't even get me started on Doggie Doggies Who's Got Your Bone and Jump Rope!

Checkers is easy to figure. How can a Christian be involved in anything that requires him to jump somebody?

Y'all are too much! When I was hearing this from my sis, all I could think was, "It's just an ancient game with no relevance to my Christian Walk". And, that's still what I think.

Yes, checkers is clearly evil, but I will say that I have a game on my computer where you can play checkers with frogs. So when you "jump" another checker, you really "jump"!

I think people read to much into thing a lot of times. I think people who say that chess is a sin to play needs to reconcider there faith because chess is just a game and it's not meant to be read into. I mean if we read into every little thing then everything that is out there someone would concider to be a sin.

Apparantly it is banned in some Islamic countries for a similar reason of it being against God, although I dont know what that is, I thought it may have been because they dont like the depictions of Knights?
