Church music...

    Have y'all noticed...

    ... that much of the modern church music has been

    a) Dummed down for our younger and "unchallenged" generations AND

    b) that singing the words is sometimes a theological nightmare?!

    Last week the song "I am a friend of God, I am a friend of God," ad nauseum. No, I am a child of God. Jesus said "i no longer call you servant but friend" but that was before the resurrectoin. When we weren't BRETHREN to Him! Friend, for believers, is a "step down" to being under the schoolmaster again!

    Or this -- "Come into our midst, Oh Lord" (Again, over and over and over). He's already HERE if there are 2 or more believers. Are they insinuating that there are not??

    I was always taught to mean what you say when you sing but when we get on one of these songs, I spend more time "editing" what I say than worshipping.

    How about y'all?

    When We All Get To Heaven is one that I sing differently. The first verse says:

    In those mansions bright and blessed
    He'll prepare for us a place.

    It has been nearly 2000 years since the cross. I do believe that place is prepared by now.

    I sing it 'He's prepared for us a place.'

    After reading the "Beat" thread, it is clear that if what is reflected in the minds of people I see posting are indeed in ministry, be it a Pastor, Assistant/Associate or Youth Pastors, along with other types of leaders, the INFANTS have taken over the building, so to speak.

    I am amazed at the reasoning of some people. They sound like that haven't gotten past spiritual diapers, never mind mental diapers and at best are still arguing like Jr. High Schoolers because Mommy and Daddy didn't say explicitly this or that.

    But the Bible refers to this kind of issue. It is a matter of PRINCIPLE. For the immature the only thing that dictates their life are EXPLICIT statements and boundaries in the Bible. Outside of that they run rampant with justification for all kinds of lower common denominators and associative inclusions in their life, simply because it doesn't say it in black and white what is or isn't permitted.

    Blindness of blindness and immaturity of immaturity. Which leads me to state once again a ruling principle:

    Unfortunately we have within the church today toddlers being promoted to Pastoral roles and leadership which results in ignorance, foolishness and an emphasis on license of self instead of thought toward others.

    Amen, brother! That's the way I used to sing it, too!

    In fact, I'm trying to send Him the materials as we speak -- gold, silver, and precious stones -- what little He may judge me to have done in my pitiful life (1Cor 3).

    2. Note 2 Cor 13:14--were those Trinitarian concepts not theirs already, yet Paul prayers for them to be with them?


    3. So the problem is with you and not the songs.

    Our music is carefully evaluated before being used. We as a staff look at songs to make sure they theologically "line up."

    We also make sure that great hymns of the faith...some a millenium or more old, others much, much newer....aren't forgotten by a new generation.

    Can I just say I hate that song? I know the verses are verses from Scripture, but still - the chorus drives me NUTS.

    When I sing in worship, I want to WORSHIP - not just sing a song. I want to sing of my heart to the Lord and honor Him. I can sing any old song any old time but the worship at church is special to me - it's FOR God, and not just to sing about Him but to sing TO Him.

    For example, today we sang Joy to the Lord, Angels we have Heard on High then Glory in the Highest (a modern worship song by Chris Tomlin)

    You are the first
    You go before
    You are the last
    Lord, You're the encore
    Your name's in lights for all to see
    The starry host declare Your glory

    Glory in the highest
    Glory in the highest
    Glory in the highest

    Apart from You there is no god
    Light of the world

    Our church only sings "old" hymns (if it's written since 1800 it's probably no good).

    But Christmas carols are some of the WORST THEOLOGY I KNOW. They make CCM look deep!!

    I'm not a "grinch" BTW...

    ... yesterday's service was a FANTASTIC contemporary Christmas presentation put on by all the junior choirs called "The Mystery of the Manger" by a written, produced, and presented (first time in Texas) at our church by Celeste Clysdale. If your church has a chance to perform this, go out and get the script. It's great!

    The way I see it is better for young people to be singing Christian songs you do not like in word or style than running the roads.

    It is just your opinion which songs are proper style or which reflect what a "mature Christian" should sing. As TC pointed out, you gave no basis for your criticism. Of course, that is consistant with your criticism of sovereignty and grace doctrines.

    I agree about the constant repeating of songs... A few Sundays ago we sang a song that repeated "blessed be the name" 32 times in 4 verses... oops, sorry that was the hymn "Blesed be the name" .... my bad :tonofbricks:

    AS I said, The WORDS ARE DUMBED DOWN and THE NOTES ARE SO SIMPLE, YOU DON'T NEED MUSIC SCORE TO SING THEM.

    Hmm, but you may have a point. Maybe I don't like YOUR expression of sovereignty and grace because it has been "dumbed down" and has no biblical "score" to "sing" by! :laugh:

    If there is one thing people on BB know about me it is that I like modern Christian music....

    But having said that!

    I can't stand the song... "I can sing of your love forever"!!!
    It feels like forever when I have to sing it over, and over, and over... and over!!!

    Ok... refer back to rbells post above me.... I am going to my cave now.
