As far as gambling and giving money to the church.

Gambling is bad, giving money to the church is good.

BUT...

I have a question.. If someone is lazy, has a poor work ethic, "rides the clock" and even occasionally steels from work should the church take his tithe? He is obtaining his money in a sinful manner, right?

I am not saying either side is correct, personally if this were an issue in my church I wouldn't give it much thought either way, it is just money if we take it fine, if we don't fine. Frankly there are much bigger problems in your average church.

I just wanted to point out the implications of a particular argument, I will also say this church has obviously made a moral standard and they are unwilling to compromises it.. For that I have a great amount of respect for them

I was referring to the act of killing.
Since gambling is basically a risk at the expense of gaining a benefit, buying a home, 401K, stock market, starting or buying a business would all have to be classified as sin, too. Games of chance (odds is a better word) are only one avenue of gambling.

You are still on the "classified as sin" wavelength. So being a Christian is checking a list of sins? Isn't it much more than that?

I also do not see that gambling is the same starting a business, although I do agree playing the stock market - especially high risk stuff- is like gambling. Not all risk taking is like the state lottery.

It seems like the way people justify state gambling is by comparing it to anything that involves risk; this is a fallacy. the chances are higher that you will get struck by lightning than winning the state lottery, so the odds are against it, if you want to use the odds argument.

If Christians can't see the difference between state sponsored gambling, or even gambling in a casino, and starting a business, then I give up. There's not point in saying anything because the responses do not make sense.

Well, as far as I am concerned, gambling, in and of itself, is not a sin. If I thought it was I would also be against purchasing stocks and bonds since both require elements of chance. I am not much of a gambler, simply because I don't enjoy doing it very much.

I was not saying making a wastful decision was a virtue as you put it. There are a lot of decisions that are made that are stupid, but not sinful.

As I said before where is the backing to call it sin? I know it is not a good decision, I know it is wastful, i know as a whole the industry survives making the poor poorer. AND all of these are reasons I do not gamble, but non of these really make it sin IMHO.

If it's neither a sin nor a virtue, then you're saying it's a neutral act. Even if you were granted that premise, then you've opened yourself up to the explicit Scriptures that admonish you to abstain from vanity and to do only those things that are good and virtuous.

But yours is not a Scriptural view—not by a long shot. According the Scriptures, everything is either good or evil, and if you can't prove it to be good and acceptable to God, then there is only one option left.
