My hard drive is making lots of noise leading me to believe it will fail soon. I have had other hard dives make the same noise prior to failing so I am fairly confident about my diagnosis.

I have purchased a new hard dirve and the physical installitaion is simple. My delemia is do I want to attempt to clone the old drive to the new one my self or should I pay someone to do it for me. I have a good local repair place that told me to install a new drive and clone the old one would be about a half hour of labor which would cost me $25. However they probably would't be able to get to it for about two weeks.

Has anyone ever cloned a hard drive? Do you recommend any specific programs to clone a dirve? Is cloning a drive such a pain in the neck I should wait the two weeks?

The physical isn't too hard, but the rest can be a little tricky unless you,ve done it before. ci think you would have to set up your cmos & bios first even if you are copying one drive to another.
I've never tried it, though I may have the same problem soon, mines growling too. So I'll be keeping an eye on here too!
Check the help files on your system...it might have something on transfering fron one drive to another, & with all the info available on the net I'm sure it can be found somewhere.

I just bought a new hard drive that had a program on the install disk to clone the drive. Have you looked at the install disk?

If not, and you're not comfortable with it, $25 is a reasonable amount for half hour of work. I know with mine, when I did it, it took more like 3 hours, but it was all self driven, I didn't have to do much after I got it started.

I believe that is why they are only charging for 1/2 of work.

I would say on your comfort level, if it's a high 8 or 9 out of ten, then do it yourself, if it's less then a 5 or 4, then have it done. Better to be without a short while, then to lose data in my opinion.

I have done that several times. I have always used the CD which came with the hard drive. The only problem I had later was that I had to reactivate some of my programs so they would work. It seems they are hard drive sepcific.

There's commercial software for this, not sure how much $.
Symantec's 'Ghost 2003' backup software and PowerQuest's 'Drive Image' v 7.0.1 can handle DOS, Windows 95/NT/2000/XP, LINUX, and other partitions, even when mixed on the same hard disk.

If by chance your using Unix/Linix you could just use the dd command.

Ghost comes with some of the symantec tools disks if you happen to have one of them laying around.

I used the software that came with the drive and it was a piece of cake. The biggest hassel was that I had to install the new drive as the slave, clone my C:drive to it, then open up the case again to change the jumpers making my new drive the master.
